It's a good movie. Not great but certainly not awful. There were flaws as I mentioned above but if I can sit through a film that goes over two hours and not think about checking my watch, it's good. :)
The film got mixed reviews but I'd lean more toward positive than negative. I would recommend it for all the reasons listed above. :)
The costuming was gorgeous on the men - I love ther period suits. And I think they got the history right more so than they did for PE - but as PE was more of an action film and this was more of a historical drama that's pretty much of a given.
I liked the sweet moments between Tolson & Hoover - their last meal together - them holding hands in the car after the movie premiere - buying the suit in the beginning and the ending with the letter broke my heart. You can't help but think if they had only lived just a little later and if Hoover had had the courage...
I agree on the costuming! They did a bang-up job on that. The women's clothes were well-done, too.
They probably did get the history more accurate than Public Enemies. I have read about Hoover so I can say that some of the facts were true. That fight scene between Clyde and Edgar was pure fiction, of course, because there never has been any evidence they were lovers much less had a fight like this. So it's interesting that the filmmakers decided to make their relationship fact instead of mere speculation.
That last meal was a good scene despite Hammer's awful make-up. There was sweetness and sadness there. I especially liked the handclasp.
Oh, on your journal you did mention possibly re-writing scenes in your PE sequel after seeing this movie. I would recommend keeping it as is. You could use info from this movie for another story. :)
I loved the early stuff and wanted more, more, more on that. I found the later stuff much less interesting, probably because the makeup on Arnie was so horrific that it kept pulling me out of the movie.
