Comic-Con 101: Is Its 'Hot Status' Good Or Bad?

Jul 26, 2008 20:57

I've never been to Comic-Con, but it sounds like it's evolved into a huge happening. Sure, people love to see the stars and get the latest news, but has the con itself lost something with this expansion into hot status? Or is it all good?

I've found that Big Name cons have their excitment, but all the buzz and scurrying around is centered around the so-called 'stars'. I guess that's why I like Media West so much. No BNs, just fans getting together to talk passionately about their interests.

Once Hollywood gets into something, it's always changed.

I think it would be okay if all the big Hollywood projects came out, as long as they were comic book related. Or at the very least genre related. I think it's odd when there are panels for 24 and Bones, and Pineapple Express.

That's a good point. That sounds like a Media West panel schedule. If I was going to Comic-Con, I'd want topics about comics.

Having just returned from the Con, I have mixed feelings about it. I dislike it when articles try to take the "ooh, there are stars there!" route to try to justify the Con's existence. There's nothing wrong with liking comics! ;)

I can definitely see what you're saying, but from my experience there this year, I think it also depends on individual Con goers and what they want to get out of it. If you want that whole Hollywood thing you can have that, but I also felt like there was definitely room for people who are mainly comics fans. The main Batman panel with Grant Morrison, Paul Dini and others who are involved with current titles was packed. I saw a panel on Batman manga in the 60s and the LGBT presence in LOSH fandom. The Hollywood presence is there but there's still a lot of comics stuff present as well. But I think it would be a shame if the comics aspect were completely overun by "big names". Let's just hope that never happens!

Yeah, that's definitely the only reason that the mainstream media is interested. Just a bunch of 'comics geeks' doesn't 'sell'. Unless they're making fun of them.

Sounds like you still have plenty of 'real' comics fans, and hopefully CC won't turn into Sundance! :)
