Author’s Notes: Happy Birthday, mithen! :) She requested: Pairing: Trinity. I wrote Clark/Bruce with Diana protecting their backs. ;) Prompt: I'd love to see something with the Trinity in battle, actually! I love the way you love h/c, so maybe one of them getting hurt (any of the three is fine, I can imagine fun angles with any of them) and the other two worrying about them and protecting them? That would be really sweet reading for me!
Also written for my 2011 Wonder Woman Love Fic/Art 70th Anniversary Celebration Challenge and for the worlds_finest 5th Birthday Celebration. Prompt: Superman is seriously (not mortally) injured in a battle. Batman is trying very hard not to freak out about it (and failing) (mithen). Banner Choice: No. 1, please! :)

“Hola, Knight! Do not attempt to raise your sword again!”

The alien Knight laughed contemptuously, thrusting his sword toward Wonder Woman, who easily parried it as the rays of this world’s orange sun glinted off her sword and armor, burnishing it to a russet gold.

Wonder Woman grimly fought back. She and the rest of the Justice League were fighting an army of Knights on this beleaguered planet, their strength and skill of inhuman proportions. Superman’s skills had been needed, until the emerald-tinted sword of the Green Knight had run through no-longer-invulnerable flesh. The orange sun had taken away most of Superman’s strength.

Now, the Man of Steel was bleeding heavily, Batman hovering over him as the Dark Knight worked frantically to staunch the bleeding.

“Superman! Don’t you dare die on me!” Batman pressed hard on the wound, the color draining from his lover’s face. “Don’t you dare!”

Wonder Woman drove the Green Knight back, fear rising. She used that rage to her advantage as a good Warrior would.

Use the flame of your rage to temper your sword. Focus clear and shining. Athena, guide my aim.

The rest of the JLA was too engaged in their own battles to help protect Superman. It was up to her and Batman.

“C’mon, Clark, open your eyes,” said Batman in a low voice. “Please don’t leave me.”

Wonder Woman’s heart nearly broke as she heard the desperation in Batman’s voice.

Aphrodite, do not take Clark way from us, especially Bruce. It would destroy him. Their love is so pure and strong. It is a beacon to the world. Please, do not take Clark!

Her sword clashed against the Green Knight, sparks flying. She drove forward, Batman tearing off a strip of his costume, and he bound the wound in Superman’s side. He picked up his lover and headed for a shelter of boulders, Wonder Woman speeding up the pace of her attack. She had to keep her friends safe.

As the Amazon Princess kept up her protective attack, Batman succeeded in getting Superman to relative safety, the boulders creating a natural haven. He knelt beside Superman.

Batman pushed the sweaty hair back from his lover’s brow, Superman breathing in shallow gasps. He was cold and clammy to the touch, Batman removing his gauntlet to gauge Superman’s temperature.

Batman felt his panic rising. He tried to ruthlessly suppress it but when it came to Superman…

Clark, you’ve got to hold on!

Batman listened to the sounds of battle as he pressed down on the wound, watching the bandage grow red much faster than was good for his peace of mind. It always rattled him to see Clark wounded. It wasn’t natural.

“Clark,” he whispered. His hand trembled as he tried to staunch the bleeding. “It’ll be all right, Clark. Diana is warding off the enemy, and I’m taking care of you. I’ll always take care of you. Haven’t I always done so? I always will.”

The sounds of screams and clanging swords mingled with the distant caw of birds that resembled Earth vultures. The smell of blood and smoke mingled with sweat as the heat shimmered and danced. Batman got to his feet and checked on Wonder Woman’s progress, his hand hovering over his utility belt, but Diana was succeeding as the finest Warrior of Earth would.

“Br…Bruce…”

Bruce pushed his cowl back, hurrying to Clark’s side. “Clark, can you breathe all right?” He was worried about the other man’s lungs. What if the sword had damaged them?

“I…” Clark tried to catch his breath. “What…happened?”

“The Green Knight ran you through with his sword.”

Clark winced. “Where’s…Diana?”

“Keeping you safe.” The clang of swords underscored his words.

“Bruce, you have to…help her.”

“She’s doing fine.” Bruce touched the side of Clark’s face.

Clark’s eyes were that unearthly blue that always tinged Bruce’s soul. He could see the pain lurking in those sapphire depths.

“Hold on, Clark. Just hold on.” Bruce grabbed his lover’s hand and squeezed.

Clark could read the fear and pain in Bruce’s eyes. The pain in his side was nearly unbearable. He tried to catch his breath, laced with fire.

“It’ll be okay. We’ll get you back to the base and get you taken care of.”

Clark squeezed Bruce’s hand weakly. “It’ll be okay, Bruce.”

Bruce looked at his lover and Clark’s heart nearly broke.

Oh, Bruce.

Diana’s cry of triumph heartened Clark. If their friend could beat back the enemy, they might have a chance.

The pain was tearing up his insides, his limbs trembling. He knew that he was in deep trouble.

Diana appeared at the entrance to their sanctuary.

“Hola, my friends! Now is the time to quit this battlefield.”

Diana was concerned about her friends. Clark looked like he was on death’s door and Bruce was frantic. He liked to think of himself as so controlled and inscrutable, but when it came to Clark, he wore his heart on his sleeve.

Diana held up her bloodstained sword. “Be swift, Batman. We only have a small window of opportunity.”

Bruce nodded as he put his cowl back on and lifted Superman into his arms, cradling his lover against his chest.

“This way,” said Diana, her golden armor glinting. She turned to guard her friends’ backs.

Bruce was staggering under Clark’s weight, but he braced himself and managed to move quickly enough to head back to behind the lines with Diana moving backwards, brandishing her sword.

Bruce nearly stumbled, but he refused to fail and forged ahead, Diana skirmishing with a few bold Knights.

Bruce cried out as a rock hit him in the back, sending him staggering as Clark whimpered. Gritting his teeth, Bruce kept upright with his precious burden, the smell of Clark’s blood cloying...terrifying.

“Bruce…” Clark said in a rasping tone.

“Quiet, Clark.” Bruce’s voice was strained but he kept walking. The orange sun beat down on him and Clark as smoke from the battlefield drifted on the wind.

Clark was studying his face, Bruce uncomfortably aware that his lover could see right through him. He was grateful to see the lines of their side appear, soldiers running out to help.

& & & & & &

Bruce stayed with Clark as he was brought to a medical tent and Diana returned to the fray. He refused to leave his lover’s side as the physicians worked on Clark, the wound raw and ugly. Clark knew that he would remain scarred until the yellow sun touched him again. Gritting his teeth against the pain, Clark held Bruce’s hand tightly. If he still had his strength, he would have broken it.

He began to drift, desperate to hold on, and Bruce bent down and whispered in his ear, “I’ll be right here.”

“I know,” Clark rasped and let blessed oblivion take him.
