The wind rushed across his face and Clark smiled.
An answering smile came from Dick, who fit comfortably against him as they flew.
It was a beautiful day, sunny and light and fluffy as the clouds’ wispiness tickled their faces. Dick’s smile rivaled the sun, and Clark felt a great happiness well up in him, the only other time he had felt such near-perfection having been enjoyed with Dick’s mentor.
And even then, Bruce had never felt completely relaxed with him as they flew. Usually, flying meant to him a way to get from Point A to Point B, and flying for the sake of flying rarely occurred to him, though Clark had persuaded him a few times to just enjoy it. Still, there had been that tiny bit of not-relaxation, and Clark wondered if Bruce had thought allowing himself to trust his lover completely in the sky would be some sort of weakness.
But of course, Dick was different. While he could be similar to Bruce in dedication and intelligence, he lived life in a very different way. He wanted to enjoy the warmth of the sun on his face, the wind in his hair, and best of all, fly.
Dick loved flying more than anyone Clark knew, even Kara, and it was a gift he could give Dick in a way so few could.
Neither man spoke, simply enjoying flight, and then Clark gently began to twist them around, Dick’s laughter like silvery ribbons dancing across the sky, their bodies close in a dance that both knew intimately. At first the twists were slow, sensuous, then Clark dipped quickly, the rush startling and delighting Dick, whose green gloves rested easily on his back, Dick’s trust complete and awe-inspiring.
They dipped, swirled, bodies locked together, then Clark gently separated them, Dick spreading out and holding on to him by one hand. They were like two parachutists holding hands, but Dick had no fear of falling. He was born without that fear, at least when there was no good reason for it, and he was so full of joy that Clark nearly cried with the beauty of it, the strong, young body all his, given to him freely and with a heart bruised by the same lover who had hurt him, but neither of them would blame Bruce. Bruce was damaged, and sadly he might never know this free and complete joy.
Dick had lost his childhood to tragedy, too, but somehow, though his parents’ loss never truly left him, he had managed to greet life once more with a brightness that dazzled the eye and made the blood sing. Bruce’s legacy was the Wayne legacy. Dick’s legacy was flying and freedom, one the Flying Graysons would approve of with smiling nods.
The only sound was the wind whistling past them, Clark taking Dick’s other hand and they drew together in a airy dance, slow and graceful, Clark at once feeling clumsy and awkward next to Dick’s grace, yet also as effortless as his young lover, his strength and power secondary to a beauty that even he had never realized until Dick had become his partner in the sky.
Their bodies touched, heads bowed together to touch, Clark’s head lifting and his hand cupping Dick’s cheek, a slight smile curving the younger man’s lips, then he brushed those lips in a gentle kiss. Their capes billowed up as their bodies twirled slowly, Clark’s senses heightened as he listened to his lover’s heartbeat, felt his strength against his own, smelled the faint scent of lemon soap and lilacs, a few tiny stray buds crushed on Dick’s skin from the Manor gardens.
His sun-born strength was matched by Dick’s sun-born smile, his brightness as dazzling as the golden orb that gently bathed the Earth this lovely day. The silence was quiet and comfortable, Clark stretching them out horizontally and flying them off into the clouds.
Dick shivered slightly in the mists, but he was delighted at the kiss of water droplets on his skin. Clark always marveled at how much skin was there to gaze upon, Dick’s costume leaving little to the imagination. Clark grinned at the thought that his young lover had the touch of not just the performer in him, but the exhibitionist as well.
Or maybe he just liked the touch of the wind or the warmth of the sun on bare skin, or perhaps it was all a mix of the wonder that was Dick Grayson.
Dick flipped his lenses back, exposing his deep-blue eyes, blinking as the mists dampened his hair and silvered his skin. Clark kissed him gently, Dick wrapping his legs around his thighs, arms encircling his back, the soft whisper of silk on bare skin as his cape fell on Dick’s arms.
Clark lifted them out of the clouds, bodies glistening from the moisture, the sun warming them with a feathery caress. They were bathed in gold, diamonds sparkling in hair and on flesh smooth and tanned. Clark inhaled the scent of Dick’s hair, a wonderful mix of his lemon-scented shampoo and clean luster. Dick’s eyes were closed as he let his senses reel, a slight smile on his face.
Clark twirled them gently, both capes fluttering up, and Dick’s head rested on his shoulder, Clark holding tight, then he nuzzled Dick’s neck, feeling the smile on his lover’s face. He turned and reluctantly headed back to the Cave, as Bruce would be waiting for them to begin their patrol, but his heart was full, and he would bring Dick up once again to dance in the clouds.
