I see his face
Everywhere
In the sun-dappled
Light of day.
I just pray,
That it’s not
Too late.

Johnny walked the shore of Lake Michigan, carrying his shoes as he let the warm water wash over his bare feet. His shirtsleeves and pants legs were rolled up, his hair wild and untamed as a strong wind blew off the lake.

The water sparkled under the hot July sun, blackbirds screeching as they flew high over Johnny’s head, the trees surrounding the shore swaying in the breeze.

He was alone on the lakeshore, the car he’d used to drive here parked several yards away. His gang was back at the hide-out, a secluded cabin deep in the woods.

Johnny had needed time alone to think, to sort things out. He was confused, unsure, and he didn’t like feeling that way.

If only he could forget Melvin Purvis…

“Mel, darlin’, you are a firecracker. Are all Southern gentlemen like you?” Johnny purred, gripping his lover’s arms and nuzzling his neck as they relaxed in bed together.

“Just the besotted ones,” Mel chuckled, his hands caressing Johnny’s chest.

“Mmm,” Johnny said as he nibbled on a delectable ear.

“Johnny, I wish to…”

“What, darlin’?”

“Stay.”

“Mel, honey…” Johnny pulled back. “Sweetness, you can’t.”

“But I want to.”

“And give up everything you’ve worked for?” Johnny caressed his lover’s arm. “I’m living on borrowed time…”

“Don’t say that.” Mel’s handsome face clearly showed his distress.

Johnny smiled sadly as he brushed stray strands of hair back from Mel’s large, beautiful eyes.

“Think about it long and hard, Sunshine, before you hitch your wagon to my star.”

Mel laughed. “I love you, Johnny. I know what I want.”

“Maybe so, but the heat’s on, honey. I don’t want you in the line of fire.”

Mel lightly kissed his lover’s lips. “I already am.”

Johnny took a handkerchief from his pocket and wiped his brow. There was a blessedly cool breeze blowing off the lake today. It had been sweltering for days, and the weathermen were predicting more brutal heat.

Johnny looked bemusedly at a pair of wagon wheels jutting up from the sand. He’d persuaded Mel to return to Chicago for the time being, worried that Hoover was getting suspicious.

That bastard would destroy Mel if he ever got wind of what his prize G-Man was up to with Public Enemy Number One.

Johnny wasn’t afraid for himself. He’d survived prison and gunfights, and had always known his time would be short, but now he had Mel to think about.

Funny what love does to a man.

He hadn’t expected to fall in love with a G-Man, of all people, but there you go. Life rarely followed plans or blueprints or anything neat and orderly.

Johnny wanted to be noble and selfless, but all he could see was Mel’s face wherever he looked, sparkling in the sunlight, his soft Southern tones as warm as honey as Johnny’s heart ached.

I was a fool, sending you away, Sunshine. A man doesn’t find love like what we have every day. When he does, you gotta reach out and grab it.

Johnny rubbed his face, glancing at the handkerchief. The initials M.P. were stitched on the cloth. It had been a sentimental impulse on his part to grab it and keep it. He could smell the scent of Mel’s cologne.

I gotta go to Chicago and see him. If he still wants me, we’ll leave the country and be happy.

Maybe his time wouldn’t have to be short after all.

Johnny smiled and headed for the car.
