Author’s Notes: This story was inspired by Mary Renault’s The Persian Boy. Alexander the Great’s men accepted their leader’s indulgence, who happened to be Bagoas, the Persian Boy, an ex-slave who shared Alexander’s bed. They didn’t object to him being male but that he was a barbarian (non-Greek). It showed their love and respect for Alexander when they accepted Bagoas, and learned to respect him in his own right.
Canon is a jumping-off point but I changed several things, including the survival of Johnny’s gang, as their dynamic was important to this story.
Mostly this is drama with elements of romance, so I said what the heck and included that in the Genre. :)
Yeah, this was going to be a one-shot, albeit a long one, but the boys were just too much fun to play with. ;)
So, enjoy this story of seduction, sex, and a touch of Stockholm Syndrome. ;)

Johnny and Red exited their car, guns out and ready when they saw the strange car parked close to the cabin. Tommy came into the clearing from the woods.
“Relax, fellas, it’s only Nelson and a coupla his boys.”
“Nelson?” Johnny growled. “I thought we rid ourselves of him at Little Bohemia.” He put his gun in its holster but still looked wary. “How’d he find us?”
“Told Sully he was workin’ with us.” Tommy lit a cigarette.
Johnny swore. “Well, there’s no help for it, I suppose. Let’s go play the good hosts and get ‘em outta here right quick.”
Red agreed, holstering his gun. They went back to the car and took out the bags of groceries they’d picked up in Bayside.
Inside the cabin the men were greeted by the loud radio, Homer and Russell sitting at the dining room table.
“The Cubs had two hits in the first, but left two men on base and didn’t score. Now we start the second inning, and the Braves come to bat.”
“Whoa, you guys deaf?” Johnny lowered the volume.
“Sorry, John,” Russell said, combing a hand through his brown hair. “I just like the feeling of being there.”
Johnny shook his head fondly. “Where’s our guests?”
“They went to the kitchen to get somethin’ to eat.”
Johnny and Red went to the kitchen, putting the bags down on the counter, but the room was empty. They started putting away the food when a burst of laughter caught their attention.
“Where…?” Johnny asked, then realized where the sound was coming from. A lump of ice hit his stomach as he ran for Mel’s room, yanking open the door.
He stared in shock at the sight of Baby Face Nelson stretched out on top of Mel while two goons held his legs down, Baby Face’s tongue down Mel’s throat.
“What the hell?”
Johnny raced in, knocking aside one of the hoods while he grabbed Nelson and shoved him off Mel, who coughed as he grasped his throat.
“Hey!” Nelson yelled as he fell to the floor. “What the fuck?!”
“This man is under my protection. Keep your hands off him!” Johnny took a step forward, hands balled into fists. “What do you think this is, prison?”
“Okay, okay. Jeez, he’s only a Fed. I just thought I’d replace the stick up his ass with somethin’ better.”
Nelson squawked as Johnny started punching him, shoving him up against the wall, Chase and Stone trying to pull him off.
“Get your fuckin’ hands off me, Dillinger!”
Red and Russell ran into the room, shoving Nelson’s men aside and pulling Johnny away. Johnny struggled, still trying to get at Nelson, who giggled as he straightened his jacket and walked out.
“That’s enough, Johnny!” Red said urgently.
Johnny finally calmed down, limbs trembling with remnants of anger and adrenaline.
“I’ll get ‘em set up with a poker game or something.” The redhead nodded toward the bed. “Take care of him.” He and Russell left, quietly closing the door.
Johnny turned and saw Mel’s knees pulled up, his arms locked around. His shirt was wrapped around him and he was trembling, his eyes cast down.
Johnny sat on the bed, carefully touching Mel’s shoulder. The other man tensed but didn’t pull away, which pleased Johnny, indicating trust.
Before he could say anything Mel asked in a voice almost too soft to hear, “Was it like that for you?”
Johnny’s mouth went dry. “Yeah.”
Mel’s intake of breath sounded painful.
“Did he hurt you?” Johnny asked quietly.
“He was about to.”
Mel looked up, and Johnny’s stomach knotted at the pain he saw shimmering in hazel depths. Mel’s right eye was already beginning to swell, his mouth swollen and bleeding. His protective instincts still fully engaged, Johnny pulled Mel to him and held on tightly.
“I won’t let him hurt you again,” Johnny whispered, stroking Mel’s hair.
& & & & & &
Johnny wanted to stay with Mel but had to play host. He didn’t want anything to set the unpredictable Nelson off.
“I wish I could beat him to a pulp,” he growled as he picked up Nelson’s discarded tie that he’d used to gag Mel. “I’m sorry, I should be here with you…”
“I understand.”
Johnny looked at Mel and sighed. The agent did understand, damnit. He rose from the bed after kissing Mel on the temple and then leaned over and unlocked the handcuffs. At Mel’s surprised expression he said, “I don’t want you at such a disadvantage again while Nelson’s here. Once he’s gone, ‘fraid you’re back to being chained up, Agent Purty.”
Mel smiled slightly. “That’s okay.” He adjusted the cloth over his wrists. “I give you my word that I won’t try to escape.” His accent rolled around the words.
Johnny smiled back, then left the room, coming back with a dustpan and broom to sweep up the shards from the broken water glass. He left again, locking the door behind him.
He swept the glass into the wastebasket, the tinkling sound as the shards hit the bottom soft in the empty room.
Mel was like that glass: strong yet delicate, shattered, and the jagged pieces capable of making himself and others bleed if not handled carefully.
Taking a deep breath, he entered the sitting room where his gang and Nelson’s were playing poker. He dropped the crumpled tie in front of Nelson, who snickered, Johnny’s fingers itching to pound him again.
He played poker, keeping up a fairly jovial front but seething inside. When he went to the kitchen to make sandwiches, Homer caught up with him.
“Johnny, Russ and I…we’re awful sorry we didn’t protect Agent Purvis better.”
“Yeah, me, too.” At Homer’s shamed look, Johnny relented. “It’s okay, just be on the look-out while those guys are here. I don’t want that to happen again.”
Homer nodded. “Agent Purvis is an all right guy, for, y’know, a Fed, but we don’t want to see him hurt that way.” He returned to the poker game and Johnny sighed. He took out the ingredients for the sandwiches.
Red entered the kitchen, going to the icebox and taking out several bottles of beer.
“You’re sure you don’t want to go easy on that? Nelson’s already hopped up.”
Red clinked the bottles on the counter. “How is Mel?”
Johnny’s mouth twisted. “Not great. I can’t blame him after Nelson’s tongue was down his throat.”
Red winced. “Johnny, it’s already getting dark. They’ll want to spend the night.”
Johnny’s tone was extremely unhappy. “I know.” He placed a slice of salami on top of the slice of cheese on Wonder bread. “I warned him off, but I can’t depend on him taking the hint. He’s unstable.”
“Yeah.”
Johnny rested his knife on the cutting board, half the salami still uncut. He looked at Red, his eyes haunted.
“Our resident nut was going to tear our Special Agent to pieces, and then let his guys have what was left.” His fingers curled around the knife handle. “You know what it was like in prison, Red. I know you were lucky, but a lot of guys weren’t.” He avoided the pity in his friend’s eyes. “It’s like shellshock. A guy who’s been raped is in shock, numb, then angry, then scared. And while Mel didn’t get it up the ass, he was still assaulted.” Johnny slowly resumed cutting the salami. “He’s gonna have nightmares. I have to be with him tonight.”
“But you don’t want Nelson to know.”
“No.” The sound of the knife hitting the cutting board echoed in the sunny kitchen. A burst of laughter came from the dining room. “Damn, I wanted to throttle him! I wouldn’t hold with raping any hostage, but…” He chopped faster. “…if Nelson knows I’ve been sleeping with Mel, all that stuff I told the guys would be true. Reputations would go down the drain.”
“Not to mention letting Nelson know Mel’s important to you.”
The knife stopped chopping, then Johnny started it up again.
“I gotta keep him safe.”
“You will.”

Johnny’s stomach tightened as he saw the flash of fear in Mel’s eyes when he entered the bedroom. He smiled to reassure the jittery agent.
He turned and locked the door, Mel’s curious expression winning another grin from Johnny. “I know; I never locked it before, but I figured you weren’t Houdini and couldn’t get out of the cuffs.”
Mel smiled slightly. He’d managed to eat the chicken noodle soup served for supper, along with a piece of rye bread.
Johnny put the rocking chair in front of the locked door. “No surprises,” he said firmly.
Mel smiled slightly. He was still fully dressed. Johnny began undressing, keeping his boxers and undershirt on.
Mel slowly began to unbutton his shirt until he was in boxers and undershirt, too. Johnny hated the black eye Mel was suffering. There were other bruises, bites and scratches on his chest and thighs, not to mention his torn and bloodied mouth, which infuriated Johnny, but he carefully kept his mood light.
He got into bed and Mel settled next to him, Johnny slipping his arm around him. Mel rested his head on Johnny’s chest, finally relaxing enough to fall asleep, Johnny staying alert until he couldn’t keep his eyes open any longer.

Mel gave a strangled cry as he sat up, shaking violently. Johnny was awake instantly, gently rubbing his lover’s back. Mel covered his face with his hands.
“I know, it’s tough, babe.” Johnny wished he didn’t know so well, remembering the struggle to try and overcome his shock after that first night in prison. He’d been all alone.
Mel would not be.
“It’s okay; I’m here.”
“I’m sorry,” Mel whispered.
“Don’t be.” He waited, then Mel turned and clung desperately to him. Johnny held on tightly. “Don’t be, Sunshine.”
