FOOD OF THE GODDESSES
Barbara browsed through the impressive array of chocolates on display: lemon and strawberry creams, peanut butter cups, mint chocolate, milk chocolate, and dark chocolate. There were molds shaped like hearts and ducks and bats, the latter causing a big grin to spread across her face. There were lollipops and train engines and an entire train, from engine to caboose, in a gold foil box.
Belgian chocolates were featured prominently. The owner of the shop wouldn’t be caught dead with a piece of Hersey chocolate. Widely scorned by Europeans, the American favorite was considered the bottom of the barrel.
Barbara noticed a camera tucked away in a corner. Good. Some of these confections were expensive.
Just what the Chocolatier would fancy.
She wandered around, looking over a selection of dark chocolate shaped like bells. She chose two, going to the cash register.
Linda would be pleased.
“A good selection, young lady,” said the distinguished white-haired man behind the counter.
“Thank you.” As he rang up the sale, she said, “What a dreadful thing a few days ago. That poor store owner, getting robbed by the Chocolatier!”
Avery Teague snorted delicately. “Another of Gotham’s pseudo-villains. So silly!”
“As silly as a Penguin?”
Teague laughed. “Yes.” He placed the small embossed box in a monogrammed raspberry-colored bag. “If the woman wishes to follow the Catwoman with themed crimes, she will be easy to catch, I daresay.”
“I agree.” Barbara paid for her purchases and took the bag.
Out on the sidewalk she touched her Bluetooth and said, “No signs of the target at Teague’s.”
“Good,” came Bruce’s suave voice over the tiny device.
“Hope we can canvass a few more shops.”
“Yes, well, as long as the target’s out there, we will.”
“Good.”
Barbara smirked. A woman knew: chocolate was Food of the Gods, or Goddesses. There should be a Goddess of Chocolate. She’d have to ask Diana.
& & & & & &
Bruce put a hand on Dick’s back as he steered him toward a display.
A dark chocolate Wayne Manor held the place of pride in Madame Freneau’s Chocolate Shoppe.
The smell of chocolate was tantalizingly strong, Dick’s mouth watering. He studied the mold.
“It’s so accurate!” Dick laughed. “There’s the windows for the library, study, kitchen…”
“…the bedroom.” Bruce’s voice was like silk chocolate: smooth and rich.
And that describes Bruce Wayne all over.
Bruce gently rubbed the small of Dick’s back, the younger man arching slightly.
“There are the gardens, the seawall…” Bruce pointed out the familiar features, continuing his gentle caresses.
“Monseiur Bruce! How delighted to see you!”
A middle-aged woman with stylishly-coiffed silver hair appeared, diamonds at her throat and wrists. She was slightly overweight, the cut of her dark-blue dress still managing to flatter her. High heels clicked on the polished floor as she approached. “And Richard! Oh, I see you like our little display, oui?”
“Very much, Madame,” said Bruce. “The chocolatier is quite gifted.”
She bowed. “I thank you, Monsieur.”
Bruce was genuinely delighted. “Outstanding, Madame.”
Her hazel eyes sparkled. “It will bring much money for charity at the auction, hmm? And perhaps you would like to see the samples of my specialty work.” She patted Dick’s arm. “Such a beautiful young man.”
Dick blushed prettily, Bruce inclining his head slightly in acknowledgment of the compliment.
“We would be most interested…” he began.
Suddenly the front door crashed open.
“Madame Freneau, your creations are exquisite. I’d like to take some with me, along with your money, darlin’.”
The Chocolatier smiled.
