I

THE LUCK OF THE EMERALD CLUB

The streets were too clean.

Batwoman stared down at the empty boulevard, noticing the lack of garbage and debris. Did this city even have rats?

Probably at least the human kind.

Over on the next street were the sounds of street musicians playing for strolling crowds, who patronized cafes, candy stores, and clubs.

Batwoman kept her attention on the empty boulevard. Soon…

A woman appeared at the far end of the street, dark hair bobbing as her heels clicked on the pavement, echoing in the silence. She carried a large handbag slung over her chest, her stylish clothes accentuating her figure.

Suddenly, a black-garbed man stepped out of an alleyway. He was wearing a ski mask and pointed a gun at the woman.

“Hand over the bag, Mademoiselle,” he said in heavily-accented English.

“I…I…”

“Now, Mademoiselle.”

She reluctantly handed over the bag. He bowed slightly, then ran back into the alley.

Batwoman followed, still marveling at Toronto’s cleanliness. A far cry from Gotham!

Her stealth was just right for the job, staying in the shadows. She followed him for several blocks until he disappeared through the back entrance of a high-end nightspot, The Emerald Club.

She smiled. Now it was time for stake-out.

Batwoman took out binoculars and peered into the club’s back room through a small window.

Big Tony LaFranca sat at an oak desk, smoking a Cuban cigar. A curvaceous woman sashayed into Batwoman’s line of sight, wearing a dark-green satin dress, emerald necklace, bracelet, and earrings, elbow-length black gloves and carrying a long cigarette holder. She sat on the arm of his chair, wrapping her arm around his shoulders.

The robber entered the room, handing over the bag. Big Tony smiled, patting his girlfriend’s thigh, and opened the bag, drawing out a beautiful golden Egyptian statuette, studded with precious jewels.

Batwoman smiled again as she put away her binoculars.

Party time.

She crashed into the office, dodging bullets and kicking the thief, knocking him cold. Big Tony yelled, “No Bat-freak is gonna wreck my score!” He took out a gun and aimed. His girlfriend chopped his arm and he roared, “You fuckin’ bitch!”

She smiled as she calmly picked up a paperwight and knocked him out.

“Brava, Miss Kitty.” Batwoman smiled and tied up the unconscious thief, then reached for the statuette.

Selina grabbed it first. “A pity we have to give it to the Royal Ontario Museum.”

“Sorry, dearest, but the Mounties would frown upon us keeping it.”

Selina pouted. Batwoman gently put the statuette back in the bag, then drew Selina to her, one gloved hand creeping up a silky thigh and up her tight skirt.

“Mmm,” Selina purred. “Have you been taking lessons from the Dark Knight as to delicious sexiness?”

“I don’t need any lessons from Tall-Dark-and-Broody to satisfy my woman.”

Selina grinned and nipped at a cowled ear. “Wait ‘til we get back to the hotel, dear.”

Batwoman smirked. “Whatever you say, Pretty Kitty.”
