FIELD OF DREAMS
Alexander gripped his hand tighter as Lex watched Zod strut down the corridor. The man’s expression was even more calculating than his other half’s.
Why hadn’t Zod simply submerged all of Lex instead of allowing his dark side to work with him?
C’mon, Lex, why wouldn’t he? Your bad self is pretty resourceful. Just look at Level Three and all your other ethically-dubious projects.
Lex tried to ignore the voice. His uneasiness at those projects was strong in his ‘good’ half.
“What are we going to do?” he asked the boy.
“Get help.”
Alexander led him the other way, the corridors gradually growing dimmer. Cobwebs festooned the halls, cold gusts of wind blowing through broken windows.
“Alexander…”
“It’s okay.”
Lex brushed at the cobwebs, eyes widening as the corridor gradually lightened, sunlight streaming through clean, whole windows, cobwebs disappearing.
“What’s happening?”
“You haven’t visited this place in awhile.”
Alexander opened a door with a red handle.
Inside was a profusion of flowers of every hue, bright under a blue sky. Further in the distance, Kansas cornfields stretched out to the horizon, a windmill whirling in the wind, The Daily Planet globe rotating even further away in a distant Metropolis skyline.
Alexander turned a corner. “There.”
A four-poster bed was set in the middle of the lush flowers, red silk sheets shimmering in the sunlight.
On top of those sheets lay a sleeping Clark, clothed in blue T-shirt and jeans.
“Kiss him awake.”
“Wha…?”
“Go ahead. It’s what your heart wants.”
“Alexander…”
The childish face looked up at him, eyes shining with a wisdom far older than his tender years.
Lex swallowed. He looked at the gorgeous man asleep on the bed. Letting Alexander’s hand go, he stepped forward.
He hadn’t seen Clark much in the past months, only when the younger man felt compelled to burst into the mansion and accuse him of something. Sometimes he was dead-on, other times completely off, but he didn’t believe Lex about anything anymore.
Why did that still hurt so much?
His headache seemed to lessen as he gazed down at incredible beauty: high cheekbones, glossy dark hair, lashes brushing tanned cheeks, a mouth begging to be kissed…
Trembling, Lex leaned forward and did just that.
The lips were warm beneath his, and eyelids fluttered open as Clark kissed back!
Amazed, Lex drew back, lost in a sparkling sea of green.
“Lex,” Clark breathed, and Lex had to sit down on the bed.
“Clark.”
“I’ve missed you.” Clark’s hand came up, fingers brushing his cheek.
“I’ve missed you, too.” Lex put his hand over Clark’s, the other man’s lips curved in a smile.
If only this was real.
“It’s real, Lex,” Alexander said.
“How? This is all in my head.”
“Not exactly.” Alexander hurried to the bed. “Clark, we need your help.”
Clark sat up. “What do you need?”
Alexander beamed. “Lex’s bad half has teamed up with Zod.”
The farmboy’s eyes clouded. “I’m familiar with Bad Lex.” He looked at the man holding his hand. “Zod wants to rule the world.”
“What is he?”
“An escapee from the Phantom Zone.”
“Phantom Zone?”
Clark nodded. “He’s a Kryptonian warlord. Conquest is what he does.” He drew Lex’s hand to his mouth and kissed it. “We have to stop him.”
“Alexander says you could have.” His voice softened. “By killing me.”
Clark shifted his eyes away. “I couldn’t.”
“Even though he’s taking over the world?”
Clark looked at him. “I…I had memories.” He put his other hand on Lex’s chest. “I knew this you was still somewhere inside.”
“What’s one life against the world?” Lex’s eyes were very blue.
“I couldn’t.”
For a moment they gazed at each other, then Clark said, “We have to stop Zod.”
Lex nodded, both men standing. Lex took a step and staggered.
“Whoa, what’s this?” Clark grabbed him.
“Headache.”
Comprehension dawned in Clark’s eyes. “The possession.” At Lex’s slight nod, Clark said, “Then you stick close to me. Alexander, you’re our scout.”
The boy nodded eagerly, and Lex wondered again at Clark’s way with children.
Maybe it’s because he’s still a big kid himself sometimes.
Or at least child-like wonder at certain things, but also a man determined to save the world.
Or just me?
They traversed through the cobwebbed corridors, eventually reaching the regular halls. Lex frowned. Were these halls even darker than before?
“Zod is getting stronger every second,” Alexander said.
Of course the boy would know his thoughts. They were all the same person.
Does including Evil Lex make us an unholy trinity?
If so, he had a savior in blue by his side.
Despite his headache, Lex wanted to plan. “How do we stop Zod and my dark side?”
Clark looked at Alexander. “I need…”
“This way.”
As they followed the boy, Clark said, “There’s a weapon we can use against Zod. As for stopping your other half…” Green eyes were solemn. “Only you can do that.”
Lex felt his stomach drop. “I’ve battled him my whole life. He’s too strong.”
Clark’s smile was gentle. “You’re stronger.”
“I hope so,” Lex said softly.
Clark’s lips curved in a confident smile, squeezing Lex’s hand.
Alexander stopped in front of a door with a blue doorknob. “It’s in here, Clark.”
“Great.” Clark ushered Lex inside after the boy.
The room was a bright, crystalline-white, jagged crystals jutting up in odd patterns. On a small platform of crystals rested a small, glowing object.
Clark didn’t let go of Lex, but reached out his free hand and touched the object. The glow intensified, and Lex shielded his eyes.
“Excalibur extracted,” Alexander said with a smile.
“What is it, Clark?”
His companion opened his hand. A diamond-shaped crystal lay in his palm, the letter ‘S’ etched into its hard surface.
“What is it?”
“The symbol of my family’s House.”
Lex frowned. “That’s an ‘S’, not a ‘K’.”
“Actually, it’s the Kryptonian symbol for the House Of El.”
“Kryptonian? That’s what Zod is.”
“Yes.”
“Wait a minute…” Shock numbed Lex.
“Yes, I’m not a meteor-infected mutant. I’m from another planet.”
Lex stared. Clark, his Clark, was an…
“How can I know this?” he muttered. “You’re in my mind.”
“Not exactly.”
Frustrated, Lex snapped, “What does that mean?”
“It means, Lex, that I’m not just in your head. I’m in here.”
Clark touched his friend’s chest directly over his heart.
Lex struggled to think beyond his rapidly-worsening headache. “If you’ve told me this, won’t my other half know?”
“I doubt it. You don’t know his plans, do you?”
“I…” Lex sighed. “No.”
“He’s ignoring you, which is good for us. Besides…” he looked at Alexander. “Our little friend can block your other half from ‘listening in’.”
“How?”
“He just can.”
“But whether you’re in my head or heart, how can I know your Secret? The real Clark would never tell me, so I can’t have it lying around in my subconscious.”
“Zod knows.”
Lex felt cold. “So since he’s possessed me, I know.”
Clark nodded. “Again, his ignoring you is good. He’ll be in the dark until it’s too late.”
“I hope so.” Lex looked down at the crystal. “So how does this defeat Zod?”
“It’ll drive him out!” Alexander chirped.
“Like an exorcism.”
Clark and Alexander nodded.
“We need you to distract Zlex in order for me to slap this on them and drive Zod out,” Clark said.
“Zlex?”
“Zod and Lex.” Clark’s eyes twinkled.
“So they’re a power couple now?” Lex’s lips quirked.
“They’re a couple who love power.”
Lex shook his head. Here they were facing terrible odds and an invasion by a tyrannical alien warlord and they were joking about celebrity names like Brangelina and other absurdities.
Lex Luthor, welcome to your life.
He felt an ache in his heart as he regarded the smiling man who held his hand. He hadn’t realized just how much he’d missed their connection.
He’s an alien, part of a conquering race.
He would never hurt us.
And you call HIM naïve!
Lex ignored the voice.
“How can we use this crystal against Zlex?”
Clark smiled, then sobered as he said, “I have to kneel before Zod.”
