MY TRUE LOVE

The earth and the stars

And the moon and the sun

Could not keep me from

My True Love.

“The Tale Of
The Sleeping Beauty”

Author Unknown

14th Century C.E.

Bruce nervously gazed upon Kal’s face.  What if he wasn’t the Prince’s True Love?  He had left his home to seek his Heart’s Desire.  What if after all this, he had failed?

Dick was waiting at the foot of the glass coffin, dawn just beginning to herald the new day.

“What do I do now?”

“Take out the goblet, sprinkle in the crushed flower, and put the Jewel on top of the powder.”

Bruce followed the instructions, his movements a little stiff from his injuries and wearing his armor.  Dick had insisted that he wear it.

He carefully lowered the Jewel into the goblet, looking at Dick.

“Just wait.”

So Bruce did, and the Jewel glowed even brighter, tiny pinpoints of green sparkling through the blue dust.  The light grew so bright that Bruce and Dick looked away, and when it dimmed, Bruce looked back and exclaimed, “The Jewel is gone!”

Dick nodded. “Now sprinkle the dust over Kal-El, foot-to-head, and kiss him.”

Nervously Bruce obeyed, watching as the dust glittered on Kal’s golden armor.  Tiny motes of gold and ruby-red began to glow with the green-and-blue as the first rays of the sun began to touch the sleeping beauty.

The dust glittered in Kal’s hair and on his lashes and face.  Bruce’s heart nearly broke at the breathtaking beauty.

He put the goblet down and Dick whispered, “Kiss him.”

Trembling with want and anxiety, Bruce leaned down, his lips touching Kal’s lush mouth.

Disappointment flared through him at the lack of response, then suddenly the sparkling lips beneath his grew warm.

Bruce pulled back, ecstatic as Kal’s glittering lashes fluttered, eyes the color of the clearest sapphires meeting Bruce’s midnight-blue as sunlight flared all around them, Bruce’s ebony armor turning to silver.

The sapphire eyes were questioning.

“Kal-El, I am your True Love.”

A smile that rivaled the sun lit Kal’s face, and he pulled Bruce into a kiss, bells jingling madly as Dick somersaulted in joy behind them.

Bruce held on tightly to Kal’s hand as they stood in the grove.  A beautiful woman had materialized in a royal-blue gown trimmed in black and white, her hand on Dick’s shoulder.

“Your guide was not in the employ of the Enchantress, but in mine.” The woman’s smile grew brighter as Dick nodded vigorously, bells echoing around the grove.

“This is Lady Zatanna, a good Witch,” he said.

“Ah.” Bruce was glad that his little friend had not been coerced by the Enchantress.

“You have done well, Prince Bruce,” said Zatanna.

“Prince?” two voices chorused.  Kal and Dick looked at Bruce, who grinned a little sheepishly.

“Of the House of Wayne, of the Kingdom of Gothamia.” Zatanna was amused as Bruce beamed with pride.

“Wow!  Two Princes!” Dick nearly bounced in joy.

Kal gazed lovingly at Bruce. “Commoner or Prince, you are my Heart’s Desire.”

Dick clapped as they kissed, Zatanna surrounding them with pixie dust.

Prince Kal’s parents were ecstatic as their son returned, and a wedding was announced with three days and nights of feasting and revelry for all in the Kingdom.

Prince Bruce’s parents journeyed to attend the wedding, glad that their son had found his Heart’s Desire.

And, lo, the people of Kryptonia once again grew prosperous under the sun, and for six months of the year, the Princes dwelled in Kryptonia, and for the other six months, in Gothamia.

And Dick and his parents were the star entertainers of the Courts in both Kingdoms, traveling with the Princes.

Jonathan and Martha were made Royal Cook and Gardener, and rented their farm to a young couple.

The Green and Red Archers were granted stewardship of the Royal Forests of the two Kingdoms.

Zatanna was given high honor in both Courts, and they all lived happily ever after.

Or, at least until the Enchantress plotted her revenge.
