JOKER-IN-THE-BOX

Clark whisked Dick back into the Batcave from their impromptu flight, the bats chittering as they made their entrance through the tunnel.  Bruce was waiting for them in full regalia, turning his Bat-glare on them.  Dick laughed.

“Sorry, Bruce!  We got a little carried away.”

“Hmph.  Time for patrol to start.”

“Yes, sir!” Dick saluted and hopped out of Clark’s arms, straightening his tunic and getting into the Batmobile.

“Ready, Superman?” asked Batman.

“Ready.”

Batman slipped behind the wheel and the Batmobile roared off, Superman right behind.

Dick listened to the thrum of the Batmobile’s engine as it roared into the city, the countryside flashing by.  He felt happy sitting next to Bruce with Clark flying overhead.  There was a sense of security here that never got old, no matter how old he got.

He was still amazed that after the tangled love lives the three of them had led, they could still be comfortable around each other and truly be the World’s Finest.  Dick had been certain that once he and Bruce had broken up and Clark and Bruce had gotten together, that it was all over for him.  He would have to find someone else and see if he could stop the ache in his chest every time he saw them together.

Then, Bruce had gone true to form and pushed Clark away to the point when even a Superman had given up, hurt and wounded but willing to do as Bruce asked.

And that’s when Dick and Clark had started, during lunches together and trying to give each other comfort for broken romances involving Bruce Wayne.

Dick had always had a crush on Clark, even as a boy who hero-worshipped him, and now he realized with delight that it could become more.

And when it did, he knew that all would be right again.

Now he was still able to work with Bruce on a nightly basis and live at the Manor while attending Gotham University without awkwardness, which still amazed him.  Bruce seemed perfectly okay with him being with Clark, and while Dick was grateful for the lack of drama, he was a little hurt that it didn’t seem to matter too much to his former lover and present partner.

He shrugged mentally.  It was probably for the best.  Did he really want a jealous Bruce causing trouble?

Now he had Clark as his lover and Bruce was still his friend and partner, so it had all worked out for the best.

“So, what have we got?” said Batman, speaking into the commlink to Superman.

“Henchmen milling around in the warehouse.  I don’t see Joker or Toyman, though.”

“They might be somewhere else.  Let’s rattle their cages.”

“Absolutely.”

Robin grinned and swung down in front of Batman.

They crashed into the warehouse, the minions yelling and pulling guns, but there really was no contest.  Robin cheerfully dispatched four on his own without breaking a sweat, and Batman coolly knocked out two and chased two others.  Superman surprised them as he flew in through an open window, sending everyone scattering.

“Ta-ta, Bat-boy!"

A familiar cackling voice caught Robin off-guard, and he was soundly thrashed by a giant fist from a jack-in-the-box.  He somersaulted through the air and slammed into a wall, stars sprinkling around his head as he blacked out.

“Robin!  Robin!”

The urgent words were underlaid with fear, and Robin slowly opened his eyes.  Head throbbing, he managed to get a blurry picture of…

“…Superman!”

“That’s right.  You okay?”

Robin started to nod, then winced. “Sorry.  Got a bit of a headache.”

“Is Robin all right?” Another anxious voice.

“Yeah, he seems fine,” Superman said to Batman. “But I’d like to take you to the hospital to get checked out.”

“No, Alfred can do it,” Robin insisted.

“You probably have a concussion,” Superman argued.

Robin glanced around and saw that they were outside the warehouse and far away from prying ears.  He reached out and grasped Superman’s hand.

“You can make sure I don’t fall asleep,” he grinned.

Superman rolled his eyes. “Yes, you sound perfectly all right.  Brat!”

Robin laughed and groaned, and Batman said as he laid a hand on Robin’s leg, “You bring him home, Superman.  I’ll wait for Jim and the police.”

Superman nodded and Robin happily snuggled in his lover’s arms as they flew up, up, and away.
