I hear a lot of courthouses have free wifi now, so you can at least get some work done and be in contact while you're sitting around.

How does the jury thing work anyway? I thought you were picked for trials anyway, but from your comment I'm assuming that you go there to be picked for random jury stuff?

Most reasonably-populated states, you get called for jury duty and are part of the jury pool for that day. If you aren't empaneled (placed on an actual trial jury), you are released and your jury duty is considered to be fulfilled.

For instance, here in Mass we have a "One Day/One Trial" system, which means you show up for the jury pool for one day, and if you are picked for a trial, you have to serve on the panel for as long as that trial takes (however long that may be), but if you aren't picked then your service is fulfilled for two years.
