Yukio Inokuma [C8]: Bursting the Bubble

Mar 11, 2008 00:06

“Read it again!”

The six-year-old sat bolt upright in his bed. Brightly-colored racecars zoomed across his bed sheets motionlessly as his feet and legs rested warmly beneath. He wasn’t the least bit sleepy.

“Yukio,” Daisuke smiled at his son tiredly. “You’ve already heard this story a million times. Are you sure that you don’t me to read another story?” he motioned to the small bookcase that was crammed with children’s books and other toys.

“No.” the boy said firmly. “I like hearing about Pappa Blue Jay and his adventures.”

The man sighed as he opened up the bright blue book. “”Okay fine.” With another tired smile, he began: “In a big green forest far far away…a long long time ago…there lived a wise old Blue Jay. The forest was usually very very peaceful and quiet…but today was different. Something was not quite right in the big green forest...”

“…did you get his gun?”

Sayuri appeared shocked and appalled that Yukio had asked such a question.

Was it really that big of a deal?

“Well, I mean…it would have been nice if you had gotten it! That way we would have had protection!”

The girl’s eyes trained low on the ground. “Ryo and Hisa have it.”

Yukio blinked. “Ryo and Hisa?” Kimasu was killed by the likes of them?

“Great…”

Suddenly, Sayuri whirled around to face Yukio. “What did you have against Kimasu anyway? All he ever tried to do was help us!”

“Ha!” he let out a rude laugh. “"Look. It's sad he's dead and all, Sayuri...but you can't say that he didn't do it to himself. I mean…his dumb plan of trying to escape? He went too far. Nobody can escape the Program! It's never been done before! The boy picked up his duffel bag while he continued talking.

“Maybe he tried to help YOU…but he didn't like me because I didn't go along with everything he said like a sheep!"

The look on Sayuri’s face was one of pure ice.

“At least I didn’t go around complaining like a child about every single thing. Do you know how annoying you are?”

“…‘I don’t know where Possum went’ said the timid deer to the elderly Blue Jay and his grandson. ‘Have you tried looking for him down by the strea-”

“Why would Possum run off like that?”

Daisuke stopped reading and looked at his son. “What do you mean?”

“Well…Possum had a family. I don’t know why he would run away.”

“Yukio, you know what happens. Possum didn’t run off, he was captured by the evil hunters.”

“Daddy! I was trying to play along with the story! I’m pretending that it’s my first time hearing it!”

“…oh, okay.” Daisuke said. He was slowly falling asleep himself. The nine hour days he spent at the office were not kind to him. Subtly, he began to pick up the pace of his reading.

“and so, Pappa Blue Jay and his grandson went down to the stream in search of the missing Possum.”

“Oh REALLY?” Yukio exclaimed - his voice rising angrily. How dare she!

“Well I'm sorry I'm the only voice of reason around here! He was stupid, really! I mean...really.” the boy waved his hand dramatically. “He thought he was going to get mirrors from people who were playing this game to win? What was he going to do? Ask them nicely? Trade them for a loaf of bread? If you ask me, that self-proclaimed 'GENIUS' got what he deserved.”

WHACK!

Sayuri’s palm connected sharply with Yukio’s left cheek. The stinging sensation mixed with shock as it spread through his entire body.

Had she just…slapped him?

Letting out a yell of rage, Yukio thrust his arms forward. He felt his open hands hit Sayuri squarely in the chest. The next thing he knew, the girl was on the ground.

What the hell was going on here? Why was Sayuri turning on him all of a sudden? Had Kimasu pumped her head full of his pompous thoughts? A minute ago they had been hugging…and now she was lying in a heap on the ground. Yukio’s mind raced.

She was never really with him from the start.

“D-don’t make me regret coming back for you!” the boy yelled angrily. His hands were balled into shaking fists.

He was a fool to go back for her.

She had been on Kimasu’s side the entire time.

“I’ve half a heart to leave you here to die when I escape!” Sayuri spat.

Yukio felt his forehead tighten. “When you escape?!” a malicious laugh erupted from inside him. The girl still thought that she had a chance to escape this! She was so stupid!

From the ground, Sayuri began to pull herself up. “What? Oh, that’s right. You’re not even going to try to live. You’re going to die. And you know what? No one’s going to care.”

It all happened so fast.

Yukio’s eyes flashed with rage as he leapt forward toward the girl on the ground. She was no longer Sayuri…but someone else. Someone who had spoken the harsh truth and needed to be silenced

As he lunged, he let out a violent yell. His fingers flew forward, outstretched and ready to clamp around the neck of the girl he had once called a friend.

…‘Now now,’ said the wise old Blue Jay to his feisty grandson. ‘We mustn’t let our tempers get the best of us. For if we allow that to happen, we might end up doing something that we would later on regret.’

The last words fell from Daisuke’s lips as he closed the book, but Yukio was already fast asleep.
