I saw Spider Man 3 last night, and yeah, I didn't like it very much. And one of its problems was the surfeit of characters, villain and otherwise. But none of that really killed the movie.
What killed the movie was that Sam Raimi got too much creative control. There was so much hokey, ridiculous joke shit in Spidey 3 that it totally killed the tone, and totally took you out of the movie.
Basically, the tone was like Army Of Darkness. Slapsticky ridiculousness all over the place--which is great, and often very funny, but not really what you want for Spider Man.
Gotta say: Spider Man 3 is not nearly as bad as I'd been led to believe. It's not SM1 or 2 or X1 or 2, but it's a few notches over F4 and leagues above X3 and the Hulk.
It does REALLY suffer at points, though. And you have to wonder about a film when the best acting comes from Topher Grace.
Yah...I agree. Tons better than X3 or the Hulk, but still not all that great. Of course, I went into SM3 with lowered expectations...
Bottom line is I found the movie highly entertaining in parts and a little silly in others (though never offensively so) and my interest in/enthusiam for the characters wasn't completely destroyed (as was the case with X3); so, I guess I wouldn't mind an SM4.
