As part of her response to my “Man of Science, Man of Faith” essay, Heather asked me this very thoughtful question:

Would you purposefully hang out with someone you didn’t like just because you ( Read more... )

Martin - Well, you and the lovely Heather have pretty much nailed it as far as my personal experience is concerned.

I can be *very* social - my LJ and FB "personae" are as honest and close-to-the-IRL-me as I can make them.

But - that openness did not come easily or naturally to me, despite (or perhaps because of) being the son and sibling of natural social butterflies. It took some good therapy, and a fair amount of hard work.

I think because of that, I have little - perhaps too little - patience with those who have not done their own social scut work. Martin, you describe it very well in your bullet points. It doesn't help that my larger social circle includes more than a few guys who are Apbsie's, both diagnosed and not-.

For whatever reason the women in my social world are, as a group much better-socialzed than the guys.

Thank you for giving me the chance to talk/vent about this!

a further thought.

as i have gotten older, i see more and more often that the people who rub me the wrong way are the people who are too close to being like me.
or who freely display some characteristic that i supress in myself because i find it abhorent for some reason.
there are still people who rub me the wrong way without being like me. or without giving me ANY justifiable reason to dislike them. but i am trying to develop a habit of first questioning whether or not these people are like me and if that is why they piss me off.
if the fault is being like me i can usually find a way to forgive them for annoying me. :)

I hadn't really thought about it, but I agree. Sometimes a person can just strike you "wrong" for no reason. Could be anything I suppose, from biological (pheremones or other biological cues), to the psychological (insert various psychobabble theories here), to the supernatural (conflicting "auras" or something).
