The mid-west part is based on the original book which involved a lot of allegory about the gold standard vs the silver standard. Dorothy dreams of something beyond the mid-west and follows the yellow brick road to oz. but finds that the wizard is a sham, that the east and west (coasts) are evil, and that all she really needed were her silver slippers and the wholesome mid-west farmers (that people thought would get screwed if the US went on the gold standard instead of the silver).

Tin Man just lacked good scripting, good acting (despite good actors), and stylistic cohesion. It was so bad we didn't even finish it!
Too bad that people latch onto crap like this and the good stuff (like Firefly) gets the shaft.
