Arcana: Devil
Time Period: 2012
Name: Ezra Mildmay
Gender: Male
Blood Type: AB
Birthday/Sign: February 22nd / Pisces
Age: 16
Occupation/Grade: 11th Grade/no job
Room: 408

PB: I'm drawing my own :>
Appearance: Ezra has chin-length, wavy dark brown hair, tan skin and pale gray eyes. He's about 5' 9" with a lean build and strong shoulders. Body language wise, he's a little restless and rarely makes eye contact. Smiles come easily, softening an otherwise serious face, and he shrugs a lot. He picks at the skin and nails of his fingers when he's nervous, and his fingers are noticeably covered in colorful band aids.
He follows the school's dress code and maintains a neat appearance, ironing his clothes and such out of habit ingrained from carefully avoiding his strict aunt's lectures. He'll roll up his sleeves to his elbows and loosen his tie as the day wears on, though.
Out of class, Ezra wears simple jeans and t-shirts in black or monochrome tones, with an occasional bright color like pink or yellow. They fit loosely, hiding his narrow frame. Ezra seems uncomfortable or stiff in his school clothes at times, and will change into his personal ones as soon as possible after class.

Personality:

Ezra's a pretty quiet and serious guy, though not unfriendly. He always gives the impression that that he's holding back somehow, biting back words, tamping down displays of emotion. Truthfully, Ezra feels detached from others his age and sees temptations everywhere. It's his belief that if he keeps a tight enough reign on things, if he's disciplined enough, makes all the right decisions, he won't end up like "her" - like his sister.

He's a realist and practically minded, and is happy to act as a source of reason and encouragement to his friends. If he sees a clear way to help or make himself useful, he'll take it, whether it be lending an ear or helping hand. He can be a worrywart and a downer at times, but he has an odd sense of gallows humor to go along with it.

Ezra is strict with himself, and puts a lot of effort and consideration into things that are important to him. If something's worth doing, he can be trusted to do it right. He's a good student, but doesn't have any concrete plans for the future. He knows he wants to fulfill his promises to his aunt and sister and prove to them that he'll do just fine on his own, but he's unsure of how to accomplish that.

In group situations, he does his best to keep things harmonious and not overlook anyone's feelings, regardless of whether or not his own are compromised. He deals with stress and bottled-up frustration in indirect ways - he'll avoid others, smoke, shoplift and commit other small crimes, which he's lucky enough to have avoided being caught for. Despite this, Ezra's not the doormat he appears to be. If pushed to do something that goes against his ethics, he'll dig his heels in and won't budge an inch.

Ezra's favorite pastime is cooking. Though he'll deny it in the face of praise, he has some talent at it. He likes cooking for friends and family most, but enjoys challenging himself every once in awhile. Ezra likes to make pastries or cook dinner as a thank-you or bribe, and like any healthy teenager enjoys a good meal himself. He's shy about using the kitchen appliances when other students are around, but he can be found there easily a few times a week.

History:

Ezra was born into a lower-income family in the city of Chicago. His mother worked multiple jobs and his father was a factory worker, so he and his older siblings, Ariana, by four years, and Abraham, by six years, quickly learned to take care of each other in a nearly empty home. They were a tightly knit family and for a few years everything seemed like it would work out.

Ezra was always much quieter and more obedient than his siblings. As the baby of the family he was kept more sheltered, especially as his brother and sister grew older and spent more time on the city streets and less time watching over him. When both of them got to high school age, Abraham got a job to help their parents, but Ariana started skipping school and disappearing for days at a time. She introduced Ezra to cigarettes when he was fourteen and started trying other drugs herself. Her behavior became increasingly wild, and exacerbated problems already forming between their mother and father.

Ezra, for the most part, kept his head down and kept himself busy with his junior high's track and field team, and with a few oddballs and would-be loners he became friends with due to his easy-going, nonjudgmental nature. He tried to take responsibility for himself, so he'd be one less thing for everyone to worry about. Through it all, he was the only one still able to have a civil conversation with Ariana.

Ezra's "aunt", really an old and close friend of his mother's, dropped by in the summer for a few weeks while visiting family. Troubled by the situation, she offered to take Ezra back to Connecticut to live with her and her six year old daughter Nina so that he could attend a better high school. Seeing no improvements with his sister, and with Abraham now out of the house and their marriage falling apart fast, his parents didn't stop him. Ezra felt for a long time that he was abandoning his family, especially Ariana, who took an icy attitude with him and eventually stopped speaking to him entirely. His aunt told him to focus on the things he could change, and he spent the rest of the summer adjusting to his new surroundings and his aunt's more affluent and strict lifestyle.

It wasn't long until his increased freedom tempted him though, and he broke a few of her rules in the first few months. She began to have doubts about her idea, but he begged her to give him another chance. Since then, Ezra's been abiding by her rules even when out of her sight at Adessi Hall. He hopes that by the time he graduates, he can be someone both his sister and aunt can be proud of.

. Bondage . Materialism . Ignorance . Hopelessness .

Perhaps the most misunderstood card of all the major arcana, the Devil is not really "Satan" at all, but Pan the half-goat nature god and/or Dionysius. These are gods of pleasure and abandon, of wild behavior and unbridled desires. With Capricorn as its ruling sign, this is a card about ambitions; it is also synonymous with temptation and addiction. On the flip side, however, the card can be a warning to someone who is too restrained, someone who never allows themselves to get passionate or messy or wild - or ambitious. This, too, is a form of enslavement. As a person, the Devil can stand for a man of money or erotic power, aggressive, controlling, or just persuasive. This is not to say a bad man, but certainly a powerful man who is hard to resist. The important thing is to remind the Querent that any chain is freely worn. In most cases, you are enslaved only because you allow it.

This card explores some very frightening things, things we are taught to view as evil or shameful. Like earthy materialism, sexual desire, valuables, food, or drugs. Lack of control, excess, obsession and raw ambition. At its absolute worst, this is either the addict or the stalker, totally obsessed, enslaved. At its best, this is a card about giving into impulse, cutting lose, going for the gold, climbing every mountain.

Among all the cards, this is one of the most complex; interestingly because no other card is so one-sided. Most cards urge balance, unity, restraint, yin-yang. Not this card. Completely tilted toward the masculine, it is a card that revels in extremity. There is a convincing argument that this is the most powerful and dangerous card in the deck. Magically speaking, it is the one card in the deck that holds the secret of how to escape the material and temporal bonds of Earth.

Weapon: Trashcan lid! Level up to shields.
Stats: Magic, Luck, Strength, Agility, Vitality.
Persona: Xochipilli (Aztec god of excess, art and agriculture, also called "Five/Seven Flower Prince")
Strength: Fire > Almighty
Weakness: Slash Physical
Primary Skillset: Scanning
Secondary Skillset: Fire

Other: Ezra's kind of a secret slob, so the disparity between his neat appearance and mess of a room can be jarring at first xD His aunt can't work miracles. He'll make an effort if it really bothers his roomie, though.
