Thanks for sharing your experience Susie. Although what we do is not exactly the same I do feel that the creative/design community suffers greatly in this city. Being in advertising/design I've gotten to know creatives from all parts of the country and beyond, most would make the same assessment. This is a great city but people that come here are not as driven or motivated as they are in NY or elsewhere. People come here to take it slow and easy which tends to trickle down to many aspects of our city. I for one tend to wrestle with the idea of moving away on a regular basis and do so not because I don't like it here but because I see the limitations. That does give this place great potential to make new things happen but it would require a lot of work. I do hope things turn around for you and this city begins to show more appreciation for you and other great artists.

thanks so much for your note, abe. i'm sorry to hear that you've had the same experience in san diego. i agree, people here are so laid back it's almost as if they just don't have the energy to care when it comes to culture. the more i've started talking about this issue, the more i realize a lot of the creative people in san diego feel the same way. at the same time, i think we all have to work so much harder to make our livings (due to the cost of living in SD) compared to other cities that have a similarly small creative community, that no one really has time to make something extraordinary happen. it's a shame and can't help but notice how it wears on my hopes/dreams.

I've been following your work since I moved to San Diego 6 years ago, though I now live in LA, and I am so bummed to hear about all the trouble you're having! I love your work and, no it's not you, it's San Diego which is why we had to leave. It's a great place to visit but living as an artist...not so much. Move to LA!

thank you for the note! i'm sorry to hear you had the same experience here. a lot of people say the same thing, "move to LA" - sad to see so many other people's hopes were dashed in this city, too.

the market in SD is dry and don't take it personally, you're talented as all hell. I know SD is home but as someone who just left it, you miss it but when there is more out there for your growth and your career, you don't look back so much. the crafting/art scene in other places are bumpin'.

Yeah, the husband got a job in Atlantic City so we moved near Philadelphia, on the jersey side this past summer. We kinda had no choice but to move cause the job market was so bad. Adventure time! If you're ever out in these parts let me know.

And you're welcome :)

You are all kinds of awesome, Susie! So sorry that things have been daunting in SD, but rest assured that it is not a reflection of you or your work. Here's wishing you a happy and fruitful 2012! :)
