something for nothing

"[In a forest] you feel that sense of something for nothing, for all this is coming to you simply by dint of walking around and deploying your senses."
from the Omnivore's Dilemma
(a book I have been crawling with for over a year now, almost done at last. my review here)

Good book but parts of it are hard to get through! And of course that is a beautiful painting!

i agree, it can be really dry at parts. my favorite was the final chapter, minus the totally gross boar hunt. PS thanks for the compliment! this is an unfinished painting (though now it is finished, but i don't have a photo of it)

I wasn't sure how far you were in the book. I liked the beginning where he talked a lot about corn. I also liked the mushroom part. The middle didn't keep my interest. I have read a lot of his books and they are all pretty good. I loved Botany of Desire but I really have a thing for plants and produce so I am not sure if everyone would like it as much as I did. I really enjoyed reading about Johnny Appleseed.

i finished reading it today. the quote above came from about page 400 or so. the corn stuff was super boring to me because i've already seen "Food Inc"! (which is like the movie version of the first two parts, including chicken beheading at Joel Saladin's farm and all the corn stuff, organics stuff, etc)

the middle part was so boring that i switched to audio book just to force myself to see it through. seriously, i would fall asleep after reading two pages during that whole section.

as a vegetarian, i find it totally preposterous that he dismissively dedicated 3 pages to the merits of it. food books always seem to do that!
the mushroom part was my favorite also.

i love this painting, especially against the sketch behind it.
