I love the idea of donating towards a nonprofit space. the money I spend on shows goes toward supporting businesses I am ok with, but I think they charge *way* too much and the vendors take on all the risk, which just seems unfair to me, having done shows where I made $ and some where I haven't...perhaps next year I can organize something that will support the community instead!
i agree! shows are so expensive to do - and in san diego, i feel like i usually just barely recoup the costs. i think a big problem with some shows is that they're a profitable venture for the people who organize them - which seems sort of wrong to me on some levels, because then their concern isn't with quality, it's with scale!
the non-profit art space hosted our show, and we brought a lot of people into the space for the first time & donated back, so i think it was pretty successful for everybody involved!!
susie! great post. i haven't written my re-cap post yet because i just want to say, IT WAS AMAZING over and over again, and that's not very interested to read. i am SO proud of us & am so excited to have a whole new slew of crafty friends. the night was incredible! thanks for being so wonderful! xoxox, dain
