And, though it can be argued that in Ancient times it was also a matter of hygiene, circumcision isn't the only religiously prescribed mutilation of its kind. It's kind of baffling how acceptable it's become just on account of being the one version that happened to permeate society because two major faiths that included it in practise spread so effectively.
Just think - if the ways of the Mayans had survived, some of us might be periodically piercing our 'down-there' bits with stingray spines as part of prayer. Not much difference in my book.
Genital mutilation is genital mutilation. And pain is pain, which has an effect on human development no matter when it happens.
I really don't believe circumcision is at all warranted nowadays. The foreskin isn't the huge germ-catcher and infection risk it used to be.
Sorry if that's all rehash; just puttin' in my two cents.
