I feel like the writer credits explain your 2nd and 3rd paragraph. Sometimes they manage to write better episodes, but this wasn't one. I'm not sure if they were trying to avoid anvils so hard that they just heaped on misdirection (which they really like to use as a story-telling device) and went on to confuscate everything. The confession scene is a prime example
