Very interesting analysis! Thanks for sharing! Just out of curiosity, how does that final crane shot compare with the final shot of Casablanca?

Wonderful post, lovely observations.

The screencaps of the vertical lines are awesome. I also love what Serge did with luminous objects in foreground and background, mainly candles, but also the turquoise objects in the foreground in screencap 20 and the bright blue curtain lines in the BG in screencap 19. I'm seeing he mainly stuck to a turquoise and blue motif in the dark scenes, down to their clothes! In fact, one could probably write a whole paper on turquoise representing her and blue representing him and what it all means .... *totally not a film geek myself, plainly*

I figure the DP finally getting to direct is going to go as crazy as he wants to with the visuals, and it looks like he did! Thanks for your thoughtful analysis.
