Last week was the .Astronomy meeting. What a pleasure it was to be back in Europe for a few days, especially the Netherlands that I have known so well for all these years. Leiden is of interest to me as of late as I read a book about the pilgrims and they spent time living there before coming to America.
It was living in the Netherlands that exposed them to pragmatic ideas about religion/state funny enough and they brought some of those ideas to America, which in turned influenced American Democracy.
Though I think our democracy could use a refresher course or influence once again.

I understand that the American fascination with waffles began with the pilgrims in Leiden, who loved the Dutch Stroopwaffles. Which, I may say, is one of the special foods I like to bring back from NL.

It makes perfect sense to me. It sounds like the stay in the Netherlands did a lot of good for the birth of America.
