Currently sitting in the top floor exec. lounge of the Warsaw Hilton looking out over a dreary, rainy cold city. Spousal unit wants to go out on the town ... in the rain; I'd rather veg in the hotel.

Awesome. I want to travel to exotic places really, really bad.

So far i've gone as far as Toronto.

Well, i have plenty of time left. (I hope.)

Dude, there is no better time to start than NOW. I know families whose kids are top tier elites by their 1st or 2nd birthdays. Of course it helps if your spouse has the same urge.

Most of our better junkets have been funded by miles racked up on cheap domestic trips we had to take anyway (e.g. visiting my mother, although the way NW & DL made it hard to keep those cheap the last couple years). Once you have gold or plat status, the miles accumulate 2X as fast with bonuses. There are some other tricks, but that's the major source of our miles. Weekend trans-Atlantic trips on cheap $240-400 tickets are another good way to build up miles.

Living near ATL you might think you're stuck with Delta, but connecting with other carrier's hubs whenever possible (these days we prefer Continental in Houston) will build up miles faster.

The key thing is getting started somehow ....
