Birthdays that are on round-numbered years take on significance because we have five fingers on each hand (uh, most of us). It's a statistical quirk. If we used a base-12 system (which, mathematically, makes a lot more sense in some ways) you wouldn't worry as much.

When I turned 30 I was working a renfaire in GA and went to bed early with a book and a couple of rats, inside my leaky RV. Significant? I dunno.

Am I an adult? I have a lot of comic books...

If you like doing things by yourself in general then I would definitely go out - catch a movie or something like that. Or invite one of your new friends or cow-orkers or something out to dinner, but don't necessarily tell them it's your bday so that you can have a dinner out but it won't be a "birthday dinner".

Dunno if any of that helps.

Sucks to be in a new place for this birthday. If there's something you can think of that you would enjoy, you should definitely do/buy that for yourself on your birthday!

I have a few years on you, and I'm still waiting for the "I feel like a grown-up" part. Not that I want to feel grown-up. I like this phase where you are adult enough to do what you want, but not adult enough to have settled into dullness. I think it's not the milestones that are important, but the journey towards finding happiness, whatever that means to you.

I'll do a long-distance toast to you tonight. Happy birthday, sweetie. Eat dessert first!
