The prospect of gay marriage legalization is one of the few social debates that brings can make me teary-eyed. I'm just not very teary-eyed by nature, but the fact that gays can't marry in even in relatively democratic areas of the world is just egregious, and it's a pretty personal issue for me.

I saw the article about the two women who had been together for 55 years and read it to my mom over the phone last night...I was tearing up too. And happy as I am that it's finally legal for them, it's frustrating to me that they've had to wait so long.

It's frustrating, but still inspiring to think about where gay rights were 50 or 100 years ago - I think they are becoming integrated and accepted a lot quicker than, say, African-Americans were/are.

It's so generational too - I think our generation will really drive this issue forward, because many younger people have such a different mindset about it than their parents, across the political spectrum.

So very, very true. I was discussing this with my mom the other night and she was telling me about the time she really became used to the idea of homosexuality and life partners and such and I could honestly say I never had that moment of understanding. It's just always made sense to me.

Yeah, I've thought it was a fine and dandy way to be since I was about 9, probably partially because it was an identity that was thrust on me by various bullies throughout my young life.

Plus, I came up with the idea then to marry my best friend instead of an (*ugh*) boy, and was a bit piqued to discover I wasn't the first person with that idea...

My family and I drove by the San Francisco City Hall this weekend. It took us a bit to realize why there were so many news trucks around. Yay! It may only be one small step forward, but it's still a step forward.

Ooh, you were in San Francisco! Fun! I think Elliott and I probably won't make it there before we leave, which is criminal, but thus is life...
