HOW IS A RAVEN LIKE A WRITING DESK? and other Random Thoughts

Jan 12, 2010 20:45

A new year and brand new thoughts.  I've noticed that I go on LJ to read everyone else's entries, but very rarely post myself.  For a writer, I sure don't know how to start writing.  I've never been excellent at journals, so that may be why.

I can start a novel easy.  I can finish one too.  The middle part is harder.  This third novel is much ( Read more... )

Which newspaper do you work for? That's so exciting - I would love to work in journalism. And I really can't imagine anything more gruelling than writing an original novel. It must take a huge amount of dedication. I'd love to know when you get one finished and what happens with it!!!

I definitely listen to music when I'm writing. Whilst writing the final chapter of Water I've been listening to Mumford & Sons' album and Florence + the Machine (she annoys me, but a lot of her songs are quite epic!). Sometimes it gets to a point where I can't write unless I'm listening to music. The only problem I find is that when I read it back, without music, it doesn't read the same way - like it's lost some of its effect.

Laura, I TOTALLY forgot to write in my post that when I first read Water (the very first time :), I was listening to Dido's second album, Life for Rent. It still reminds me of Water and I listen to it whenever I reread it. Water is my quintessential Dramione fic (Le swoon ( ... )

Rejections or not, it's still brilliant that you've pushed yourself that far. So many people fall at the first hurdle (otherwise known as writing more than one chapter....)! Definitely sell a soundtrack with your novel! Then I can buy that too! =D

Accounting - that must mean you're good with numbers?! I envy you for that. I'm terrible with them. Weirdly I got an A in Maths when I last took an exam in it (about 6 years ago!)...and now I've forgotten all of it. To the extent where I'm getting myself a maths tutor over summer because I have to take verbal and numeracy tests to get onto graduate programmes.

Thank you. It's funny that I don't really have trouble writing the novels, it's having the self-confidence to allow others to read them that I have problems with. I will get over it. My dreams are too big to let my ego get in the way for too long.

About the math...it was my least favorite subject and I never went past Algebra II (in the States that all you have to get through to graduate high school). In college I almost failed the basic course. What I can't understand is, I actually understand and enjoy working in accounting. I think it makes way more sense than crap like trig or calculus. Beats me...

You know, I remember briefly scanning my Flist and seeing this, and having to wait to respond because of crazy business. Then the madness kept going and I forgot, and now I've scanned back waaaay far in my Flist page to find you again.

I am going to check out this album you listened to! Someone actually made a soundtrack for TF today, but I've been thinking of making one of my own, so maybe I'll find some gold in what you were listening to.

Is your best friend home to stay?

You definitely should! A lot of people would be interested in a TF soundtrack. The Bare album is very good- the whole thing (especially if you like Annie Lennox). Something about the sound of this particular album reminds me of all of your stories (AST and TF mostly).

My best friend is hopefully back for good. She is hoping to find a job in D.C. and if that doesn't work, NYC. She would like to settle down for awhile. Thanks for asking!
