Music for a drive

Dec 17, 2006 10:57

I'll soon be embarking (with Rebecca) on the 14-hour drive to Seattle (probably starting on Friday). There's one thing I need before leaving: new music. Sure, I could just listen to the Beatles all the way, but why do that when I can get into something new? Unfortunately, I'm almost completely out of the loop with regard to music these days ( Read more... )

I'm building the archive again:

http://peter.betcha.com/media/Music/

Yay for misappropriation of corporate resources! There used to be a way to make Apache auto-tar a directory on access to .tar, but I can't find mention of it any more. Maybe I'll have to put an ftpd on a strange port.

New stuff? I dunno, but I'm listening to:
Stars - Set Yourself on Fire
Cordelia's Dad
The Molehill Orkestrah
Joanna Newsom
Billy Bragg & Wilco
The Decemberists - The Crane Wife
New Fruit Bats, but I guess I didn't get it uploaded

... 's a start.

I second The Crane Wife. I'm just getting over an awesome Decemberists habit. Despite their slightly simplistic lyrics, I've also really enjoyed Picaresque, Castaways and Cutouts, and The Tain.

The Crane Wife is the only Decemberists I can really stand for a sustained period of time. But I've been enjoying it. Or was, until my external HD decided to stop working.

Awesome, that's a good start. What's all this Joanna Newsom business, anyway? I'd never heard of her before yesterday, and now I read a bunch of 10-best lists and she's all over it.

Looks like it'll be 1.5 weeks, the 22nd or 23rd through the 1st or 2nd. As to why drive, various reasons:

1. The TSA sucks.
2. We didn't get around to looking at tickets until the last couple weeks, and they're not only freakishly expensive ($211 was the cheapest one-way from SFO-SEA), but also scarce (you can't fly out of San Jose on Friday or Saturday, for example).
3. I get to have a car while in the city. If I rented, it'd be like $600.
4. Road trip!

I hadn't heard of her, either, but got invited to a show a couple weeks back. Somewhere between a nymph playing a harp and Bjork. I enjoy her music but wouldn't be able to take too much of it at once. I don't really know whether you'd be into her, but it's worth a shot.

Since the Crane Wife has been mentioned repeatedly, I have no good recommendations... but I do offer you good luck on that drive. Sounds like hell.
