These have been the happiest months of his life. It's a thought that wakes him up with startling clarity: these have been the happiest months of his life, the ones he's spent with Faye. There's a simple truth to the way things have happened and that's this: like being out in the sun too long, a person doesn't always know they've had enough until well after the fact, and by the time they realize it it's too late to take things back.
If anyone tried to take this back, he'd kill them. Look at her: she's here and she's beautiful and whether or not she knows it, she holds his heart in her hand.
It's remarkable.
He's been so wrapped up in trying to decide what's fair for her that he's been slowly and methodically denying something vitally important for himself.
And really, it's something Faye deserves to know. Sitting up, he reaches for his shirt and throws it on, buttons it up part way, and just watches Faye sleep. Isn't she lovely?
What's he waiting for? Leaning over, he kisses her awake.
