It's still going to cost something to replace worn out parts with new, non-dangerous parts.
I'd say start with a roadbike and think about your roading style. Riding in the street? What distances? Do you like sitting upright, hunched over, blah....
Yeah... I should say zero dollars ish. I am willing to put some money into good brakes and doohickies and whatnots ;P
I think the best style would be for street riding, for up to 10 - 20 miles (maybe more) and the upright is fine but I don't mind being hunched over for aerodynamics either. I want it to be light, but strong enough to support my weight.
