So, how do you do it? And where do you like to do it?

Your WRITING!  I'm really interested in other writers' process (oh, this is sounding worse and worse, isn't it?). So, answer me these questions, of you will:

• Where do you do most of your writing? Office? Kitchen? At work? On the subway?
• How do you write? Notes, longhand, computer composer?

writing process, debs give away

1. In my home office.
2. Computer (although sometimes I'll jot notes longhand).
3. I need to work with my online group - we check in every 15 minutes and keep one another honest. (like now i'm going to have to confess that I was checking LJ when I should have been writing...!)

WHERE. Wherever I can find a clean space. Normally the dining room table, but sometimes in the kitchen. I hate my nomadic existence, though, and would love a home office for writing. My latest plot: we're redecorating our bedroom in the next few months, and I'd like to take out this huge pointless bookcase and replace it with our small desk from the guest room. If I can't have an office, I'd at least like a nook!

HOW. Computer composer. I always start in one place and just go from there, ever since I was a kid and wrote in a notebook...it would always be in the same notebook. Which got messy. Getting a computer obviously helped with this. ;)

QUIRK: I have two. The first one seriously slows me down...I always feel compelled to go back and re-read huge sections before I start writing. This may be because I don't write as often as I'd like, and re-reading helps get me back in a groove. I dunno. the second you already know...I am usually struck with ideas while driving.

I can even show you a picture! :D

That's where I write. I do all my drafts sitting in my comfy leather chair, on my laptop. (I find it really hard to write on my desktop computer; I'm not exactly sure why.) I do line edits on print-outs (which I may take just about anywhere--around the apartment, on the subway, etc.) and then enter the changes on the desktop computer.

Occasionally I bring the laptop out with me and write on the subway or in a coffee shop, if I'm desperate for time and that's the only way I can get some writing in. But I don't really like writing with conversations etc. going on around me. Quiet is good.

Brainstorming and outlining happens pen on paper, in my notebooks and, when I'm getting close to actually writing, on index cards, one scene or chapter per card.

Well, lately I have been writing in bed with my laptop until the wee hours. But I’m making big strides to start working in my office again. I also enjoy writing at my local Starbucks with a venti hot chocolate at my side. When I’m at home I write in longhand but I can usually write anywhere, with whatever tool available.

When writing in longhand, I only use blue unibal pens (micro fine point) and a journal with unlined paper. Lines are constricting. And the quirkest think I do is have some music or TV playing in the background. Can’t write if I can hear myself think!

Great question!

I do most of my writing in my office, although I've learned to write almost anywhere.

Mostly, I compose on the computer, although sometimes I need to jumpstart something with some longhand work. If I'm writing poetry, I tend to do multiple long-hand drafts until I am satisfied. Then I'll put it on the computer and do further revisions on-screen.

Quirks: I prefer black ink when I'm writing longhand. I definitely prefer to write when I'm alone, or when the only people around are complete strangers. I also mostly work without music, although if I'm trying to get into a character's head, I'll listen to a playlist until the words flow, at which point I'm not paying attention to the music anyway.
