where the roads wander

Jan 17, 2006 22:38

I've started training for my 2006 race season. Thus, long, long miles on the pleasant roads around Boston. Feels like any road I try turns into a 2 lane highway. Anyone have a favorite ride? I like loops more than out-n-backs, but I'll take anything. Any websites that have a bunch of routes on them ( Read more... )

advice, routes

I do tons of loops in newton/weston/wayland etc. There are tons of small roads, you can go on backroads forever.

I usually just explore, that's the best way to find new routes.

Thanks man, I like to explore too, but sometimes you just want a good ride and not have to figure out where you are.
I friended you by the way....we're on a lot of the same communities

the ride BNB plots out for its Bike-a-thon is really nice. At this point with the salt on the roads you might not be able to see the cues ("BNB" stenciled on the pavement at every turn) but there must be a cue sheet somewhere. You can pick it up near Jamaica pond, and it goes out to Dover, beyond, and back via the Blue Hills Reservation. All the roads are small, you pass through a nature reserve and other pretty spots, and you end up at Farm Pond (and you can keep going from there). I think the Pocket Rides from the BU Bridge have a Farm Pond ride. All those Pocket Rides are nice because they point out the scenic/less trafficked roads that you might not have known about otherwise.

Last summer, I started getting into the habit of using the commuter rail to expand my riding territory. Take the train out to Ayer and do a 70 mile run out to Rockport. Get dinner on the beach and then take the train back in. Or ride the rails out to Worcester and pedal back home.

Most you'll pay is $6 for a round trip fare. It's a nice option when you start feeling like the backroads of Lincoln, Carlisle and Concord are getting a little too familiar.

I know Quad Cycles in Arlington does Saturday and Sunday group rides, which they say they do all year. I keep meaning to check with them and see if that's true, as I should be joining you in starting to train for next year! Charles River Wheelmen also have some year-round rides -- check both "This Month's Rides" and the recurring rides listings on that site.

CRW also has cue sheets for rides in the Boston area, which are very handy: http://www.crw.org/CueSheets/index.htm
