Some favorite bicycling routes from Davis Square

If I post some of my favorite cycling routes, will other folks do the same here?

Davis Square to Horn Pond in Woburn. The whole west side of the pond is an old parkway that has been closed to car traffic. You've got the pond on one side and woods on the other.

Davis Square to Lowell, the first half of which uses the Minuteman Bikeway and Narrow ( Read more... )

I agree; Broadway west is a much better way to travel to Arlington Center by cycle.

True, though I don't always feel like doing the Teele Square-Clarendon Hill climb.

I don't know why the DCR is having so much trouble finishing the little sidewalk connector around the north side of Alewife station. Seems like that's been under construction for 2 years.

Thanks! I'm an occasional Beacon/Hampshire commuter and will definitely try the Somerville Ave route.

I used to ride a good chunk of that last one when I lived in Eastie and worked at the Charles Theater (West End/Beacon hill). Many times I thought I could make a map of it based on smell alone.

The new Alewife Brook path from Alewife to Medford is sufficiently beautiful to justify starting your first route at Alewife. The bit by the cemetery isn't quite finished and may require walking your bike but the rest makes up for it.

Or you can detour through the cemetery -- it's a lovely place to ride too. There's a chain across the entrance on Teel Street in Arlington, so you'll have to walk your bike over or under it. The other entrance on Broadway is always open and unobstructed.

Between Mass. Ave. and Henderson street, and again from Broadway to the Mystic River, you have a choice between a paved path on the Somerville side, or a mixture of unpaved path and wooden boardwalk on the Arlington side.

I thought there was a "no bikes" sign in the cemetery.

i have never seen a "no bikes" sign there, and it used to be a part of my daily bike route.

there's a "no dogs" sign in the cemetery, but people walk their dogs there all the time, so i don't think anyone really cares if a quiet biker is going through.
