Okay, I really don't like this one. So I'm going to take a page from starfishchick's book and just set a timer and make a list... (she did that with the definition of love one, but I think I can adapt the idea

~getting babies' ears pierced is unnecessary and vaguely icky I AGREE. I sort of understand that if babies' ears are always pierced, it's not a novelty/they don't fuss with them. But I still think it's weird. And saying, "Oh, we always did it in my family," or "Well, I had mine pierced when I was an infant" is not a logical argument.
Yeah, I always hear people say that if you wait until they're pre-school aged they'll pull them out or not take care of them. So... why not wait until they're older than that? Why would you want to deal with taking care of piercings while you're still doing the diaper and bottle thing?
I got my ears pierced when I was eight. My parents made it seem like a rite of passage. I kind of enjoyed that approach. In a culture where rites of passage are few and somewhat arbitrary, I think it's important that every family creates their own. It made me feel like a big girl. I also viewed it as one of the steps toward being a woman. One of the less annoying/embarrassing ones in my book. ;-) What could be better than wearing sparkles in my ears?
I was also eight. Those eight years make a big difference. At eight, you and I both wanted the shiny, anticipated it, and, like you said, viewed it as a rite of passage. But what does a baby get out of the experience? I'm not saying that getting a baby's ears pierced is a horrible abomination, but I do think such things should wait until someone is old enough to at least WANT it.
