I have about 1000 fiction books and a further 250 I haven't read yet - I really need to have another sort out and be ruthless about what I get rid of. I'm not planning to move house but still, I have got to that stage where I look at my books and have to acknowledge there are many I will never read again, and many I'll never get round to reading at all - especially since 99% of my reading now is fanfic anyway.
I've got a fair few Andre Norton and Marion Zimmer Bradley, I wonder what I'd think of them now... I did reread my Earthsea series and Alan Garner relatively recently and still loved them, but I'm sure there are many volumes in my collection that I would think are pretty naff were I to read them now.
I really must have a look at the Vorkosgian series, you aren't the only one to recommend them in glowing terms!
Can you tell me what the name of the first book is in the Vorkosigan Saga? I looked it up on Amazon, but they never tell you which is which. Always looking out for good books!
I've never appreciated much description. I think I skipped more than half of Pride and Prejudice LOL There is an age that you enjoy certain books while some books you enjoy for a life time... interesting isn't it! What a neat experience.
I'm thankful for Kindle because if I had to reread my old paperbacks I'd be in for major eye strain :) Not sure what what happen if I reread things that impacted me in my youth. Like Planet of the Apes or the Foundation Series. I think I might also suffer from too much description. Certainly that would be true for the Dune books. Even funnier is thinking of historical romances I used to read as a guilty pleasure. They'd be horrible today. Nothing but abusive to women.
Ooh, this is such an interesting exploration! It's weird, but very enlightening, to come back to something at a different point in your life and get something completely different out of it. (Although my span of life years is pretty small!) I have an overflowing book collection myself that could use an evaluation. I have some Lloyd Alexander, Susan Cooper, L. M. Montgomery, and J. K. Rowling on my shelves, and so far they're not going anywhere! I'm a bit afraid to reread the Anne of Green Gables series, honestly, for fear of finding them too saccharine now; although I think the whimsy and romance at the core of them will always be a part of me, so they're probably a safe bet. I actually own a number of classic children's books (A. A. Milne, Roald Dahl, etc.) that I didn't read until I was "too old" for them, but good children's literature is some of the best literature and is never necessarily outgrown. There are a handful of books-creative nonfiction and contemporary fiction-that I kept from college classes and foresee loving forever
( ... )
I read your list of favorite authors and instantly thought 'that's why I enjoy reading her posts!' :) It's a bit like being in the SPN fandom--instant connection, if you know what I mean?
Do try the Vorkosigan series by McMaster Bujold, based on your reading habits I guarantee you will love them!
