I have heard that Chuck Dixon greatly desired to make Tim Drake the third Blue Beetle, although this was before Ted got ever-so-graciously shot in the head. I am totally all for the idea. (Well, he'd be Blue Beetle IV by now.) It is way better than making Tim into Batman, Jr.
That's ... so odd. Although I guess with the scarab being from space and all we might as well have a Blue Beetle Corps, since I don't want to give up any of the Beetles we've had. (Well, I don't have any real attachment to Dan, but the others.)
Tim's a big Blue Beetle fan. When he met Ted for the first time, he went complete fan-boy. It was cute. This was pre-space-scarab too.

At Chuck Dixon’s San Diego ‘Spotlight’ panel, the writer was asked about a favorite storyline that he never got to do, and the writer explained during his run on DC Robin, he wanted Ted Kord to give Tim Drake the Blue Beetle persona, and have Tim be Blue Beetle II for six months while Spoiler became Robin IV for that same time period.
Dixon said they took the storyline “upstairs” eight times but were consistently told no.
Seriously. Poor little Timmy, getting all Batted up. I think it was a really great idea, too. A very good application of the shared-universe concept, which I kinda wish would get applied to the Batbooks more often. (OK, I just wish Booster had gotten the chance to meet Steph. So sue me. It would've been greatness.)
I think it counts as a Booster fic. I loved the "And Booster Gold, apparently, had some sort of death wish." Because he did, the poor grief-stricken boy.
It's so sweet that Tim asked permission from Booster. DC should have let Tim be the next Beetle.
Attacking Batman in front of Supes and Diana? If that doesn't count as having a death wish, I don't know what does. :P
Awww, shoot, I just remembered that I meant to put "Batman needs a Robin. Booster needs a Beetle." in the Author's notes. *Wanders off to fix this grievous error*
(If I had my way it would also be the other way around. And so Jaime would get some kind of sidekick. Possibly Brenda in the Goldstar suit. Why? I don't care!)

I heart the final line of your fic. (Well, I heart the fic in general.)
