James stays in Milliways for a couple of days. At first, it's partly for Lynda, but she adjusts with impressive speed to the fact that she can't ever go home or she'll die horribly. Jack is, as usual, in his office. Mostly out of narrative convenience, but it doesn't matter. He's sitting behind his desk, sipping on a mug of Ianto's finest coffee, apparently oblivious to the fact that a "dead" man is about to walk in on him.

He should have called ahead, maybe, to warn Jack, because he and Lynda realized early on that anyone left would think they were dead.

But he can't be entirely certain that it will be a surprise - surely Jack's taken Milliways into consideration - and if it is, what exactly would a phone call do?

So, in the end, he just walks in.

"Evening, Jack."

Jack's tone is fairly neutral, but his gaze his piercing. Is this the face of a man who assumed James to be dead?...James is going to have to take it as he will.

James drops into a chair without asking, searching Jack's face.

Eventually, he says,

"No bloody wonder you wanted to make sure I had the right impression of the Doctor."
