I, too, was sad there wasn't a final Landry/Tyra moment, but I understood why there wasn't. I have been coming to terms with the fact that Landry is the Riley to Tyra's Buffy in this story, much as that makes me SIGH A LOT. *will ship them forever*
Sigh. Yeah... I hate the idea that he's Tyra's 'Riley' but I am still grateful for what we were given, and the fact that while the show focused on the storyline it was really powerful and beautiful. :) It's hard to be mad at FNL!
Wow, that was quite the in-depth analysis. I loved the finale, too. And yes, it was very sad. I wish we could see more of what's going to happen to the characters. Generally agree with your comments, though I wasn't quite as surprised by the army enlistment. He knew he wasn't going to be a football star and that's a pretty common way to get out of town for some life experience, especially in Texas. I loved how he gave Becky his state ring.
Ahh, yeah, cultural context makes it make more sense! I did think after the initial shock that it was probably a pretty 'normal' next life step if he wasn't going to college.
I'm actually typing with eyes tightly shut, because I still haven't seen season 4 and 5. It's such a good show, so I'm trying to make it last... but I'm bookmarking all you're FNL posts for further use. I hope that the finale was all you hoped for and your heart is beating a bit easier now.
:) I tried to make it last as well! :D And it was a very rewarding viewing--so I hope you enjoy it when you watch, and I'm sure you will. Thanks for sneaking in a comment! :)
PS. I am now at 99.5% certain I won't make Vividcon this year. Alas! But I can't be too sad... I got two vid cons in a year!
Luke's enlistment was sort of surprising, but then when I thought back on it, he was the one who always wanted to get out of the farm. He reveled in being part of the football program. He loved them to death (and to branding) And when that ended for him, he totally acted out. The third tier school would get him a chance to play football, but it wouldn't be like it was now. It wouldn't ever be with as much at stake. So the army is a good choice for him to get him out of there and get him that sense of teamwork for a higher goal.
I am so sad this is over, but I am glad it went out so awesomely.
Ohh, thanks for putting the Luke storyline in context... That's actually very true about him. Now that you desribe it, I can see him getting into the cameraderie of the army, as well as structure and purpose and an identity beyond his family and the farm and football...
Yes, I am very happy with the ending! And that takes away some of the sadness. I will miss it, but I can and will watch it again. :)
