Summary: You never know who you’re going to bump into at the mall. Vampires, Slayers and mutants with red glasses. Part of Jinni’s 20 minutes with Buffy challenge.
They’d met in the middle of the mall. Literally bumped into each other. He was busy using his optic blasts to decapitate one vampire, while she was kicking one vampire into another, while staking a third.
Coming round the corner, Scott almost walked straight into a roundhouse kick from Buffy. She, on the other hand, almost got her head into the path of his next optic blast. There was one of those tiny little pauses in battle while they studied each other, that both last a lifetime and couldn’t have been more than 2 seconds. They shrugged and decided to figure each other out later. Right then, they had attacking hordes of vampires to deal with.
They fell into an easy routine within minutes of their encounter. Scott had the range to deal with approaching threats, while Buffy became his defacto bodyguard and took care of any vampires that came close. Buffy noted at the back of her brain that something seemed a little off with the vampires - their reactions were just a little off. Almost as if something else was moving them. Between the two of them, they carved a dusty path through the mall, and up to the second floor. Scott took advantage of the layout to shoot the lights out and they slipped into a nearby shop to regain some breath.
Hard to believe it was only 15 minutes since the uprising happened. Buffy had been busy getting some Christmas presents for the other Scoobies, while Scott had been thinking of getting Jean something sparkling. They stood behind a cut-out DVD holder and watched the vampires rushing round on the other floors. It looked like the few shoppers that had been there just before closing time had managed to make it out with the fleeing staff, but that still raised the question of why.
Buffy raised gaze to her new partner, and spoke simply and quietly “So, what kind of demon are you?”
Scott blinked. Demon? “Mutant, actually” he whispered back. “You?”
Buffy’s turn to be slightly confused. She didn’t tend to watch much news, unless there was a body count involved somewhere. “Vampire Slayer. My job to kill these guys.”
Scott looked at what had to be 50 or 60 remaining vampires that were visible. “Nice job. Need a hand? Or an optic blast or two?”
Buffy smiled. “Won’t turn it down.”
At that point, the boom of all the exits closing echoed around the mall, and a powerful voice spoke across the loudspeaker system. “Bring me Summers now! Second floor, behind the dvd rack!”
Buffy quickly spotted the security camera behind them on the wall, and smashed it. Turning to Scott, she spoke hurriedly “Last chance to leave. They want me, not you after all.”
Scott’s jaw dropped. “No…. they want me. Scott Summers.”
Buffy’s jaw joined Scott’s. “Um… Buffy Summers.”
Okaaaay…. They shared another one of those looks, and mutually decided to deal with the approaching vampires first. Priority was to stay alive, after all.
They moved, and fought, and almost danced their way through all the vampires attacking them. Their bodies moved together in ways honed by a thousand fights, and in absolute trust in their new partner.
Buffy smiled as they swept closer to the security office. Vampires were her problem, and Scott’s were these rogue mutants or whatever he thought he’d recognized the voice as. They still didn’t know what was really happening, who was behind it, or how the two of them were connected, if at all. Either way, whoever was behind this wasn’t expecting two Summers.
Their mistake.
Big, big mistake.
So they moved, and they fought, and long delayed death walked with them. Lost in the dance, lost in the motions long drilled into them. And around them, the dust grew ever higher.
