Vidder's notes for Eighties vid

OMG YOU GUYS, I made something that doesn't involve people in space or angsty demon/vampire hunters!!!

My notes:

I don't normally do huge v/n but it has been such fun discussing vidding over in boppy's sandbox lately, so here goes.

I had the vid bunny for this project back in January. JANUARY, y'all. After making a sizable list of eighties movies with hilariously bad fashion, I began the NEVERENDING process of previewing and ripping all 27 movies featured in this vid (and a dozen or so others that I previewed, ripped and then didn't have space or time in the narrative for). I've been doing it a little bit at a time for months in between other projects, and it seriously feels like I've been working on this vid for aaaaaaaaaaages.

Then! About a month ago I had almost all my source footage, so I sat down with a huge piece of graphing paper and made the most comprehensive storyboard I've ever done. This was a completely different vid planning process for me because I don't usually have to plan everything out so far in advance of editing. But I wanted to make sure that the day-in-the-life narrative worked with all the different footage I had, so I started mapping out which scenes form which movies could go in different sections of the vid. SO. MUCH. PLANNING. GUYS.

And then a few weeks ago I started building the vid itself. The editing for this has been very iterative (haha, see previous whiny-ass post where I had to cope with Mr. BQ's excellent feedback about changing/removing a huge section...). It took me a few days to get over the fact that I was just never going to be able to use ALL the awesome footage I had for each concept (getting dressed, driving to school, going shopping, etc.). After that I was much more flexible/detached and the editing has gone really smoothly from there. I still tried to keep a good balance of maintaining a cohesive, flowing visual narrative with using clips from a variety of movies. This could have very easily become my Ode to Teen Witch and Girls Just Wanna Have Fun (my all-time fave eighties movies of the bunch)!

My only real frustration with it now is that the aspect ratios don't all match as well as I would like. But that is one of the big woes of multi-source vidding for everyone so I'm not going to bang my head against the wall about it anymore. Also! I knew in theory that footage from the eighties would be grainier and lower quality that current video standards, but it was still kind of a let down to make really high quality rips that still didn't look nearly as shiny as my usual space pilots or demon hunters do in their vids.

So that's it. Hope y'all enjoy it :)
