Last weekend I was feeling lethargic, and a bit nostalgic, so I fired up Metal Gear Sold 2. I haven't touched it for a year and a half (!) and I wanted to get some stealth in before I dusted off MGS3. That, and see if anything cool happens if you get lots of dog tags. That's not a real discworld reference.

Turtles all the way down

Pratchett borrowed heavily from what was reported to be a Hindu myth. The version of the world supported on the back of an elephant on the back of a turtle doesn't seem to be a real myth, but it was treated as fact for years.

Part two:

The snake is the world snake. Usually called Oroburus from his Norse name. Interesting, other religions seem to have the world snake. Including Hindu.

So, that's actually a Hindu reference and not a Pratchett reference.

Ah, nifty! Thanks for setting me straight. That was still pretty cool. (: All this time, I thought Pratchett's Discworld was his own parody on the state of fantasy/legend writing. Maybe it still is, but I guess a lot of it is cribbed.
