Last weekend I was feeling lethargic, and a bit nostalgic, so I fired up Metal Gear Sold 2. I haven't touched it for a year and a half (!) and I wanted to get some stealth in before I dusted off MGS3. That, and see if anything cool happens if you get lots of dog tags. Turtles all the way down
Pratchett borrowed heavily from what was reported to be a Hindu myth. The version of the world supported on the back of an elephant on the back of a turtle doesn't seem to be a real myth, but it was treated as fact for years.
Part two:
The snake is the world snake. Usually called Oroburus from his Norse name. Interesting, other religions seem to have the world snake. Including Hindu.
So, that's actually a Hindu reference and not a Pratchett reference.
