I plan on buying an external hard drive to back up my computer, plus store music/video on. Can anyone recommend something reliable, not too expensive, and not hugely bulky? Am starting to get moderately anxious that my life is on my laptop and I am sure I put it in mild peril the way I sit

Technically yes. I suspect it would be quite hard to do though.
It would be easy to do this if they were on a network (do they both have ethernet ports?). I'd say you'd be much better off using an external disk to transfer files off one and on to the other though.
External disks come in 2.5" size (small) and 3.5" size (big). The big ones are cheaper per GB but require an external power supply. How much do you want to spend / how much space do you want / how important is size?

Here is a cheap SATA caddy, and here is the IDE equivalent. Older disks are IDE and newer ones are SATA. I can provide some photos of how to tell the difference if that'd help.
You can get more expensive caddies that would work with both.
The other option is to borrow a keyboard and mouse from someone. I can lend you one if no one you know has one around.
