There were several reasons behind unifying the two worlds. It had started with one and then turned into more. When the world was still split into two, the mana left was only enough to fuel one world. Because of this, it was divided unevenly amongst the two. One world would flourish, the other would decline.
To reverse the flow of mana, a system was created called the Journey of Regeneration. The Chosen One would head towards the Tower of Salvation, where he or she would fulfill their duties and let their world become rich once more.
However, there was a more sinister method to this that was only discovered by Lloyd and his companions.
Yggdrasil, the one who split the world in two, intended to use the Chosen's body as a vessel for his lost sister, Martel. The Chosens were nothing more than bodies that seemed to match the mana signature of Martel's, and they would pass down the line until a suitable one approached.
