On the appropriation front: way too many people appropriate with the idea of imitation being the sincerest form of flattery. Like Asians? Wear a kimono! Like Hispanics? Ponchos are totally in this year! That's where appropriation gets into grey areas because it can be difficult to determine where the attitude goes from being one of honoring and respecting a culture through a conscious effort of minor participation and of being one of picking and choosing bits and pieces of a culture to subjugate with no adherance to the ideals behind it.
Have you read Bliss or Rhymes with Witch? I haven't read the latter but I'm reviewing the former next, and it's one I had a TON more problems with. I really like her voice as a writer but I'm finding I tend to have problems with the way she attempts to create compromise between her progressive beliefs (and those of her characters) and the realities of the South.
I've read a little SD and the first Traveling Pants book! I loved the latter, also loved the movie, haha. I find SD a little poorly paced for my tastes but I recommend her all the time. My tutoring kids loved her.
Rhymes with Witch was the one that I really didn't like. There was just something really off-putting to me about the voice in that one - it's been a few years since I've read it, so I can't recall exact details, but it left a bad taste in my mouth

OMG I second, third, and fourth the recommendation for The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks. A book about a girl who is described as smart and actually does smart things. It also has some really interesting things to say about gender relations that I found new and thought-provoking even though I was reading the book at 24 and not 14.
