Hello

Just thought that I'd take a few seconds and quickly introduce myself to anyone out there. I'm new to this community. I've run a used and rare shop (with select new tites) for six and a half years, been selling on-line for two (though I have kept the shop open) and have recently branched out into book publishing. Has anyone else made this leap ( Read more... )

Gwyneth,

Time becomes the prime limitation. I'm at the shop 8 hours a day, and editing manuscripts, for the moment at least, another 4 or 5. But I enjoy it immensely.

One of the things we are doing is a series of limited edition hand-bound chapbooks, both pamphlet stitched and cased. I have three bookbinding foundation courses under my belt, and can handle most everything in cloth and paper, though I have not yet moved onto leather (perhaps next year).

We've also thought of starting a series of reprints, and I am considering a few now. But I need to be careful that in my enthusiasm I don't get too carried away: there is much more work to all of this, as there was with bookselling, than I originally thought there would be, and I don't need to get in over my head.

Nice to meet you. In a manner of speaking.

Best,
Dan

Greetings, I have been thinking about branching out into book publishing myself. I've been in the used book trade for five years and recently have considered both handmade books and book publishing as possible ventures. Honestly, though, how does one get started in the book publishing world? I assume you are talking small press here. I would love to know more about how one goes about this. Not that I really need more to do, but I have to admit, I just love the book world. I wish I had begun this trek a long time ago. As Thomas Jefferson said, "I cannot live without books."

yes, small press, though there is little small about it. As I am finding out, the labour truly is Herculean ( ... )

I sell on ABE, Alibris, biblio, Choosebooks, and all the other attendant sites. Name od the shop is Biblioasis. There is a biblioasis.com under construction, but at the moment it is completely about the publishing side of things.

Cheers.
