First of all thankyou for the Canada day mention, my boyfriend is dual nationality Canadian/British, and will be most impressed and smily when I mention this later :) (I didn't know about it until reading this).
I agree completely with number one, i have been saying the very same thing reacently I find it most annoying that customers find it impossible to move their hand just a few more inches to the left to get a book on the right pile!
I've never had the second one mentioned by a customer, but then our customers are quite cheeky and expect us to look after all kinds of things for them :)
Happy Canada Day! 1. & 2. People lack respect, and are digustingly lazy, plain and simple. It is also not their house/property so quite frankly they do not care if crack the spine of the book, spill coffee or other liquid refreshment on it, have their baby/child drool/chew on the book, etc.; for they are also armed with the knowledge that the company will NOT request them to pay for the damaged book(s). I would also like to add some customers probably have the attitude: Booksellers should earn their pay...let them reshelve/tidy the book(s). It is their responsibility anyway...
(I was alerted to this holiday the moment I woke up by my oh-so-proud-to-be-Canadian. When asked what the holiday was for . . . he couldn't tell me any more than something 'aboot' asking the Queen to be their own country . . . but 'Look, google.ca has a loon on it!' *laughs*)
And along the lines of that same pet peeve, what really bugs me is when someone takes a book off the shelf, looks at it, and then puts it back ON TOP! It's not like it doesn't fit! THEY JUST TOOK IT OUT! GRR ARGH!

Alas, the company dress code requires that my shirt be blue, white or black. No patriotic red for me.
*grump*
