Not at my branch, but there is an "ABC" store in London which has a multilingual employee; the manager there has forbidden him to speak anything but English on the shop floor (off it won't matter as nobody else speaks his main language).

It's a hamfisted way to stop him socializing at length with customers of his nationality, but it's very stupid. Many's the time speaking other languages would come in USEFUL for dealing with customers. I imagine that must come in quadruple or quintuple for a store in Singapore.

I only got a few chances to practice my French or Italian on customers. But damn, knowing those languages did come in useful in the other half of the store (I worked in a combined classical music CD shop + classy bookshop).
