Chapter Five: Some wounds run too deep.
“Fred? Hermione? I need to talk to you guys. Don’t worry mum is not around. Hermione? Please?” the fiery head of Charlie Weasley was pleading with Hermione and Fred. Hermione sighed
“Come through then” she had just been informed of what Abby had done via Severus and Fred. Fred was closer and got hexed.
Charlie took a quick glance around. It was a nice home. He could see pictures of the girls, and Fred and George and Hermione. Charlie’s gut clenched as he imagined himself in those pictures.
“WHY DID YOU JUST SHOW UP LIKE THAT? YOU COULD HAVE WARNED THEM YOU IGNORNT BASTARD!” It was only Charlie’s quick reflexes that saved him from the punch that Hermione swung at him. He did expect this but…
“You could have told me that I had fathered two beautiful girls.” He said quietly. Hermione just sank into the chair she didn’t want Fred to buy but secretly loved.
“I didn’t want to hear that you wouldn’t have acknowledged them. I would have rather raised them on my own and leave the decision to them which is what I did.”
Charlie had to admit to himself that it did make sense. He treated her horribly.
“I invited the girls… and you and Fred, for Christmas at the Burrow.”
Hermione gaped. “And what did Mrs. Weasley say?”
“She wants to patch things up so she can get to know her granddaughters.”
“What did they say?” Hermione was curious now.
“Gabby said yes. I haven’t had the chance to speak to Abby. By the way, both girls have mouths like sailors, you know that right?”
Hermione sighed. “The girls spend too much time in the stores backroom with the other twins.”
“I want partial custody.” Charlie figured they were going to get nowhere after this.
“The girls have to agree on it. I won’t stop them from seeing their father. I never have.”
Charlie left shortly after. Fred was brushing his teeth listening to Hermione cry on the bed. Sighing. He dug under the sink to find Hermione’s sexy outfits that she kept hidden. Frowning a little he shook his head and transfigured some of his clothes. Adding a little glamour he stepped back into the bedroom.
“That will be enough crying I find it most distasteful Miss Granger.” Hermione shot up angrily and sputtered as she took in the sight of Fred. In the effort to cheer her up he dressed up as Severus Snape. Hermione laughed a little
“Professor? I guess that I get a detention?” she was never good at role play but she could pull it off long enough to drive Fred crazy. She laughed as Fred fought to keep a straight face as he pounced on her.
Molly was pacing in the kitchen. Charlie had told her before he left that Hermione said it was up to the girls if they wanted to be in Charlie’s life. Gabriella will agree to it. She seems quite taken with Charlie. Abigail though, Hermione has turned her against us. Thank goodness Madame Umbridge agreed with me and is switching the documents as of now. Molly wiped the counter one last time and headed up to bed.
Abby was brooding at breakfast. She refused to speak to Gabby. When the owls came, Abby was not surprised to see her father’s owl soar towards her.
Hey my Baby,
I hope that everything is alright after yesterday. I just wanted to remind you that I will always love you no matter what you decide to do. I don’t mind if you want to get to know Charlie. He is pretty cool you know. Just remember, the next time you blow something up, send it to me! It can go with the toilet seat and the brick from the potions classroom that are above the door, a piece of the headmaster’s door would have been perfect!!!
Lots of Love,
Dad.
Abigail, this is your mother.
You need to calm down or you are going to get expelled! If you have a problem again just go to Professor Snape and he will contact me.
If you send a piece of Hogwarts to your father you are grounded for the entire summer.
Love Always,
Mum.
Abigail read it twice and tucked it into her pocket. She glanced over to Gabby who was gaping at a parchment with the ministry stamp on it. Abby summoned it. Gabriella just let her scan it.
Dear Miss Abigail Elaine Granger-Weasley and Gabriella Susan Granger-Weasley,
I am pleased to inform you both that we have corrected the error on your files. Charles Arthur Weasley does in fact have the right to partial custody of you both. He will get you both for one month of the summer holidays and your birthday (seeing as it is in June) as well as either the Christmas holidays or Easter holidays.
If there are any problems, please contact the ministry for further inquiries.
Hoping you are both well,
Dolores Umbridge, Senior Undersecretary to the Minister of Magic.
Abigail burnt the letter with a flick of her wand. Gabriella decided to ask the inevitable.
“Abby? Charlie invited us… all of us, including Mum and Dad, for Christmas this year… what do you think?”
Abby stood and began walking away “Have fun Gabs. I need to stay here.”
Gabby hid her head in her arms and cried.
Christmas approached faster than anticipated. Gabby wrote to Charlie daily and told him that they were both excited to spend the hols with their new found family. Abby gave in to Gabby’s pleas and said she would come. Gabby helped Abby pack and they approached the train. Charlie would be waiting to pick them up to take them to the burrow.
“Just get on Gabs, I forgot to give this book back to Luscious, he is seeing that Blondie off and if I don’t get it back he’ll hex me into next week.”
Gabby nodded and hoped on the train. How Abby was friends with Lucius Malfoy she would never understand. She called him Luscious claiming it sounded better. When the train started moving Gabby knew something was wrong. As though the thought flew through the compartment, the Blondie Abby referred to walked in.
“Abigail asked me to give this to you.”
Hey Gabby,
I love you. I really do. And I want you to be happy and I think that seeing our biological father makes you happy. I just cannot do it. I don’t want to know him. I don’t want to know our Grandparents and I certainly will not be spending a month and a birthday and a holiday with him. I am staying at Hogwarts. Please do not send anyone to come and get me. If I end up there I will be pissed. Just be sure to have a happy Christmas, I will send your present by owl. Give my love to Dad (Fred) and Mum.
Love Your Sister,
Abigail.
Gabby cried for a while. Abigail had some issues that she could not seem to move past. Sniffing one last time, Gabby shook her head and tried to get excited for her first Christmas with her entire family, minus her sister.
Charlie’s heart sank as he watched Gabby hop off the train and head straight towards him. She obviously wasn’t waiting for her sister. Abby probably didn’t come.
“Where is Abigail?”
“Hogwarts. She messed around with a potion and it exploded and she is covered in purple dots. She may be contagious so she stayed. She gives her regrets.”
Charlie knew a lie when he heard one. Gabby was obviously trying to spare him some hurt though.
“I shall send her a card then. Common.” He took her hand and led her to the apparition point.
Hermione and Fred were already at the Burrow. Hermione was anxious to see her babies, as was Fred. Molly was bustling around happy that Hermione agreed to the custody outlines without fight. Molly forgave her somewhat. Hermione still hadn’t though.
“We’re here!” Charlie shouted when he opened the front door. Hermione rushed and hugged her daughter.
“Um... Charlie, I know that you are new at this but… you do remember that there was two of them right?” Fred asked glancing around for Abby. He had a feeling he knew where she was though.
“Abby had a potions accident and is covered in contagious purple spots. She gives her regrets.” Gabby reeled off and went to hug Fred.
George watched as Gabby set her bag down and noticed a piece of parchment sticking out of the side. He glanced at Fred. When everyone pushed Gabby to the living room they grabbed the parchment and opened it.
Hey Gabby,
Love Your Sister,
Abigail.
“What is bothering Abby so much?” George ventured after he finished reading. Fred continued to stare at the paper. His daughter just abandoned her family because she didn’t want to see her real dad.
“How much does she hate me?” Charlie walked quietly for someone so bulky. Both twins jumped. Fred handed the paper over and Charlie read it with a sigh.
“What do I do Fred? I want her. I would have been different. I would have changed…” Charlie hated crying in front of his brothers. Fred and George both pulled him into a rough hug.
“I think I need to go speak to her.” Fred said finally.
Abby sat alone in the common room. She didn’t hear Fred slip in.
“You have a very loyal sister.”
Abby jumped. “Go away. “She hauled herself up and made to head to the stairs.
“I can get up there if I have to Abby. Come talk to your dad.” Fred patted the couch. It always worried him when he had to have chats. He was seen as the fun parent and he knew it. She flopped on the couch. Fred swung her onto his lap.
“Babe Bear, what is going on?” he asked gently.
“I. don’t. Want. To see. Him.” She was looking away. It hurt Fred that she wouldn’t talk to him.
“Honey, he didn’t know about you two.”
“He called mum a slut. He blamed her and he said nasty things about her to Ronald. He said that if she got pregnant he would kill himself.” Fred looked shocked.
“How did you find that out?”
“I heard you and mum fighting one night.”
“He apologized for that.”
“I don’t care. It was his loss. Remember when I gave that boy down the street my Dumbledore Chocolate Frog card and then tried to take it back? You told me I couldn’t. Well, that was his card that he lost and he isn’t getting it back.” Abby hoped off him and headed for the stairs.
“Bye Daddy. Owl me on Christmas?”
“Of course Baby. I love you.”
“Love you too.”
Christmas at the Burrow was not a happy one. Abigail sent back every present Charlie and the rest of the Weasleys, save Fred and George gave her. A little note saying that they were mistaken and she was not a part of their family hurt everyone. Molly and Hermione had come to a tentative ceasefire and Charlie was talking to Fred without trying to beat him to a pulp.
Abby continued to get more and more frustrated every day. She couldn’t believe that her mother forgave Charlie for what he did. She wouldn’t. Not now. Not ever.
Gabby didn’t speak to Abby for the rest of the term. She still wrote to Charlie every day, complaining that she missed her sister. Charlie tried to write to Abby but she just sent the letters back. He and Hermione decided that Charlie would take them for the month of July. Hermione decided to write to Abby to tell her the plans.
My Darling Abby,
I miss you so much. I have learned from Charlie that there has been a mix up in the mail and you aren’t getting your letters from him. He blames the Romanian owls. Honey, it’s ok to get to know him. Fred understands and he will still love you and he will always be your father. You can have two. He is taking you and Gabby to Romania for the month to live with him at the Reserve. Fred and I have decided to take a holiday. Alone. Honey please just go. He is a good person. We all make mistakes in life and deserve second chances, take your Professor for example. You know that Severus used to be a death eater and he wanted to change sides. He got his second chance. Can you find it in your heart to give Charlie his?
I am just an owl away if you need me. Fred sends his love. And a skiving snack box but I confiscated it.
Love Always,
Mum and Dad.
Abby threw the letter in her bag and marched up to the front table. She stopped in front of Snape.
“Professor?”
“Yes, Miss Granger.”
“Are you happy that you got your second chance?”
Severus was floored. He didn’t know how in the hell to answer that.
“Yes.” He settled on the answer he hoped she was looking for.
“Tell the truth.”
All the teachers were staring. Severus rolled his eyes at Minerva and faced the young girl in front of him.
“I do not regret getting my second chance.”
“Thank you.” She marched out of the hall past her sister without so much as a glance.
Abby hated Charlie Weasley. She didn’t know exactly why. She had reasons of course but many of them could be explained or forgiven. It was something else though. Abby spent weeks in the library researching on hate. She had come across several passages that made a lot of sense.
When a mother is pregnant and is going through traumatic experiences, it can affect a magical baby. For instance, if a pregnant mother looses a loved one, she can go through a depression that her child can feel. It makes them feel as bad as the mother felt when the subject is brought up years later, the child not even knowing the person, grieves like they were best friends.
Abby copied the paragraph to owl to her mother. Gabby continued to try to talk to Abby but Abby refused. She was not going to talk to her sister again.
“You know, you don’t have to be a bitch all the time. For Christ’s sake Abby, I didn’t even do anything.”
Gabby stalked off Abby muttered to her retreating form. “you left me.”
Gabby heard her but kept walking. Now she knew why Abby was so mad at her. Christmas.
“Miss Granger, can you stay after class for a moment? Abigail?” Harry rubbed his eyes knocking his glasses sideways.
“Yes Professor Potter?”
“Have a seat.” She sat down, throwing her bag to the side. “Did you know that your mother and Professor Weasley used to date?”
She looked shocked. “No.”
“They did. They used to be the best of friends. I used to be a good friend to her as well. I am trying to repair the friendship but it won’t be easy. Ron is trying as well. We missed out on being Uncles because we had our heads up our arses about an issue that was blown way out of proportion. Please Abigail, don’t make the same mistake. At least with your sister. It is hurting her more than she lets on.”
“I can’t forgive her.” Abigail felt the hot rush of tears and tried to force them away.
“Why?”
“I don’t know. I just know that I can’t.”
Hermione read the article that Abby had sent and suddenly everything made sense. Abby couldn’t forgive Charlie, even if she wanted to. Hermione went through such a crappy experience and Abby, the helpless baby, wound up with her emotions. She hated Charlie deeply and Abby was subconsciously holding onto that hate.
“Well, at least we know the problem with Abby.” Hermione said out loud. Fred was in the middle of rubbing his eyes when she had said that and he poked himself.
“Ouch. What? What is wrong with Abby?”
Hermione handed him the paper and Fred’s eyes widened.
“Holly fucking shit Hermione.”
“That is where they get the language from.” Hermione grumbled and moved into the kitchen wondering how she was going to fix this.
