The Magician King by Lev Grossman

I haven't even written about this one on goodreads yet, because I'm still kind of reeling from it.

WARNINGS: BTDUBS, this book contains a graphic depiction of rape, which I was caught TOTALLY unawares by, and which was really kind of awful. So if that's an issue for you, it happens toward the end. There's a WHOLE TON of set up for it.

Anyway. Beyond the rape, this book is so melancholy and heartbreaking and bittersweet, but for all that was better than its prequel, The Magicians, in a number of ways. It had better characters who were better rendered, a tighter, more interesting plot line, and a lot more focus. Stuff just seemed to MATTER more, if that makes sense.

If you read the first, I highly recommend reading this installment, and you should because they are both wonderful books. Just prepare to need some brain candy afterwards.
